Just heard this from my friend, there's a new virus out there that imitates once of your contacts in an email with a virtual post-card. Apparently it fries your hard drive, but I'm pretty sure that the major firewall and virus prevention companies have found out how to stop it.(Both McAfee and AVG experienced updates, I don't know what for exactly but this is as good an indication as any)
Just a little heads up for ya'll.

Question: How can a virus frie a Hard Drive (make it spin to fast?)
And no more specific info on it? (Trojan/Malware/Roodkit/...?) (How you can get infected?, ...)

Cool, so you believe in fairy-tales to XD
Studies show that 92% of teens listen to rap. If you are part of the 8% that listens to real music the add this to your signature.

yeah something like that,
I dont know it exactly, but I know you can make a virus which will break something easily:
name a program x
put a command in the program: open program x
this way he keeps opening itself, and you computer wont like it

If the computer does too much processing, like thinking you can say it gets a head ache. Just like us living creatures if the head ache is serious enough it can cause some problems.
Woof!

i have heard of similar viruses that get into your bios and turn of fans. i'm not sure if they exist or if this one does but if there is a way to make a virus that causes your hard drive to overheat, i bet somebody somewhere has made it.

Like i said i heard this from a friend so I don't know if there's any truth behind it but I just felt that people would like to know about it is all

LOL guys first of all viruses are very bad no doubt they do things that you don't like, there were never viruses and probably will NEVER be a virus that physically damages your computer.

Oh this also reminds me some kid in my school brought in an "etherdestroyer", and he even proudly showed the computer teacher his wonderful project. What exactly is an "etherdestroyer"?
Well children, an "etherdestroyer" is a new homemade device i learned about today at school today. It is a cat5 ethernet cable hooked up to a 110 volt electric Line and plugged into the wall, then to the 10/100 Fast Ethernet jack on your computer. to fry out the computer's network card, and maybe score some extra points by taking out any other hardware with it.
/end sarcasm lol
Yes...YES... people are THAT stupid at the end of the school year.
I think he got to one computer, and its now only showing red screens and exclamation points instead of the Dell is loading and Xp logos. :)

@sevenoaks
in theory, i virus can do whatever any other software can do, read, write, delete information on your hard-drive, and some do do this, but very few will kill your hard drive as its reason for existing is to spread itself and user data, not destroy pc's.
some virus's maybe be able to write rubbish data to the flash chip rom ded on your motherboard killing the bios and rendering your motherboard screwed, but even fewer virus's do this.
of course, an up to date firewall/anti-virus program renders nearly all virus progs useless, and even better than that is not to download anything you dont know is 100% clean, or visit pr0n sites.
also, virus's or virii?

Viruses can ''destroy'' a computer, but not actually damage hardware, even if you got one that makes all fans stop, modern day PC's will just shut down on auto when overheating, i doubt any virus in existance can stop the equipment from turning off in an instant.
So damaging the hardware seems impossible, though perhaps after 50,000 times your DvD reader opened and closed it might break, but that seems awfully farfetch'd.
Though ruining your Software, Operating System, Formatting, Taking over, Shutting down and other things are possible, if they start taking control completely on their own, i think in the end, your the one to blame, as you don't get these viruses that easily via email's, but more easily from illegal downloads and funky sites you are visiting during the late hours.

Same, but if you download lots of things its wise to use such things ;D
Some people just like living on the near-absolute save side i guess, though i wipe my OS every 2 months or so, some keep it the same for years, then you'll definitely might want to use some security software.

Just because you don't got ad-popups dont mean its infected then, you probably got tons of backdoors, and you know what, Your part of the Zombie PC Network.
Big chance your Computer is actually in Secret Service, a Bot-Network, composed of tens if not hundreds of computers that are controlled to send Spam email by the dozens, and you know whats the best? You won't notice alot, especially if you got anything like Dual Core and so on, performance loss is unnoticed, which is exactly a bad thing :P
You Spam Machine ;D
Doubtfull you will get *true* viruses that aim for ruining your PC, but more likely you just got small trojans and such that do exactly as above-said, and remember, you don't have to notice your PC is part of a bot-network, the performance loss is unnoticable with modern PC's.

Possibly, but I do take my PC in for a check up every month. :) I think the only time i had something wrong, was about 3 months ago when i had some type of Trojan. Since then its been clean. Im still on my toes after that incident though :P

I've only ever gotten one virus, but that was from a copy site from a program with a complex name lol. I typed it in wrong and the site looked exactly the same. But AVG snatched it up right quick.
I acknowledge I was mistaken about what the virus does, and thanks all for correcting me. At the same time, I was just trying to warn some people so I had good interests in mind lol.

I think my favorte bit in this thread of largely uninformed suggestions is that a virus will write to Read Only Memory (ROM). Bit hard to do :-)

Tells things he heard nearly 2 years ago and *hopes* it still applies in the same way today.
Yes, i did not Wiki anything xD
I only know that its still practicly impossible for any kind of Software to actually wreck Computer Components, unless you get one very Well-Written virus, but most viruses remain simple because of said virus scans, but the only way i think a Virus can truly damage a component is one that gets into your Graphics Card, overwrites the BIOS somehow, and makes that thing go from 600Mhz to 2000Mhz so you can cook a steak on it.
That *might* damage your PC yes.
