After a year of City of Heroes and being one of the Sync Bug victims (check out the CoH forums), I decided to move on to other games. The call of the old “paper, pencil and dice” days just begged me to return. I went out and got the basic GW game. After looking it over and realizing that I was once again an absolute Newbie. So here are a few doubts I got before jumping into the fireballs.
1) What profession?
I know, I know. What best suits your playing style. I want to start with something simple while I learn the ropes. This will basically narrow it down to a PvE, solo character. I don’t want to team before I know what I am doing, so no support toons.
This will be a “Jack of all Trades”.
2) Dual profession or single?
Considering that I have no idea of the best combinations, would it be best to concentrate and specialize the character, or is it really that good to dual class?
More questions will come up as I play.

I'm not sure what to say characterwise, but as for professions, often in PvE, certainly I use only one profession's skills, apart from resurrect. However it's always nice to have a few extra skills, you never know when they can come in handy.

Welcome to Guild Wars :)
To answer your questions;
Warrior could possibly be your first choice it was the easiest one to learn from a fresh start. (To me anyways)
You'll almost always have 2 Professions. Ive seen people running around with one, but with 2 you should focus on your primary professions attributes first and throw in whatever you have left into your secondary attributes. Most beginner warriors are Warrior/Monk not sure what skills they use though.
Hope I helped a little bit at least ^^ Enjoy your stay in Guild Wars :)

Warrior or Ranger if you truly are just starting up and don't want someone to help you but learn from ingame experience really.
AS with the secondary professions, you can't go Single in PvE, you have to choose at one point a secondary profession to go through the storyline.
I'd say Monk, because at the first stages of gameplay the healing and ressurection skills can be handy, and you mentioned ''Classic GW'' so im presuming you have Prophecies, meaning the Henchmen in early stages really lack some serious skills and a Ressurection skill can be a blessing during those moments for yourself.
Ofcourse, this is said for someone who is Just-Starting, so keep that in mind before criticizing it, "L337" people do not apply.

Yes, however each profession has a Special Attribute, one that the other professions don't have, for example Rangers have the Expertise Attribute which lowers Energy Costs of skills being used, and Warriors have the Strength Attribute that can do extra Armor-Penetration per hit.
Most weapons on later stages have Requirements, for example with a Bow: Markmanship 5, this means that unless your character has 5 attribute points of Markmanship, the bow is rendered ineffective and it would be easier to use a lower requirement or non-requirement bow for more damage.
Counter-Active, if you ofcourse put MORE then said points in the Markmanship attribute for the bow, you do more damage.

Someone else already kind of answered this but if you wanted to be a ranger and use shield and sword you would have to be a R/W (Ranger/Warrior) Since the sword and shield skills are linked to the warrior class.
Same with a warrior and a bow, to use it (effectively) you would need to be a W/R in order to pump up your Marksmanship attribute. (i use a bow as a warrior to help pull sometimes but it does 1 damage since i have 0 marksmanship)
Also an IMPORTANT point no one has brought up if armor.
You can only apply runes (things which boost your attributes) to your armor.
You can only wear the armor of your primary profession.
So if you were a ranger you couldn't add anything to your armor to make your Sword attribute go up.
(max is 12 w/o runes or 16 with so it isnt a HUGE difference, but a difference none the less)
Personally, i would recomend a warrior or a ranger to start.
Both have great survivability, the warrior has the been Armor Level in the game and many defense skills. Warriors can also dish out an incredibly high level of damage.
Rangers are very versatile and have alot of dodging or blocking skills to help them survive. They also have the ability to decrease the energy cost of their skills making them able to spam their bow attacks. (ps rangers are the only class in the game that can get a pet)

I really cant recommend you a first class but would recommend choosing Monk as your initial secondary profession, if your going to solo alot those heals and resurrection skills will help alot.
The thing you should know about starting out in the original GW is that once you leave the areas you start in you can never go back! There is a quest in the city given by Armin Saberlin called 'Ascalon Academy' which will take you out of this area forever, he also gives you another quest prior to this to gain your 2nd profession, once you complete the 2nd profession quest leave the next quest until you have enjoyed the starting areas fully, I won't call them by their common name through fear of giving too much away :)
You can do all the secondary profession quests but not accept the secondary profession until you've decided on which suits you best, that way you get a taster of each and get the xp from them.
Great to be a newbie starting out in GW, enjoy it, it's a beautiful game.
Im languishing in the bug hole that is AoC until GW2 comes out or Aion if it's sooner.

Well if you have some prior expirence and want to try something out of the ordinary besides Warrior/Ranger. I'd go Necromancer. Necromancers are versatile and can almost give you a taste of everything. If you find it overwelming that i'd stick to a warrior. Theres no worry on how to use what skills at what time and it'll get you through the first bit of the game well. (You'll get used to the surroundings and really how the game works).
For a secondary i have to agree with the rest of the commentors that Monk is the best way to go. You can change your secondary profession later LATER on, but as far as getting a good start /Monk is the way to go.
Welcome to Guildwars, and if you need any help just shoot me a whisper and i can probably help you out ^_^ Good Luck.

If you don't wanna run support don't start a ritualist,Pragon or monk.
The closest things to jack of all trade professions are Rangers,Dervishes and Ritualists(but rits are still mostly support).
Pick a second professions there is no upside in not picking one.

Well, I don't know if I'd recommend ranger as your first class. It's certainly one of the easier utility classes to play as, but not as simple to grasp as other classes.
I would recommend starting out as an Elementalist. Overall they're a very simple class to play. More often than not all you'll be doing as an elementalist primary is blowing everything you see to hell.
