easiest way that I know for sure of
make NF character(best is either para or ranger)
kep running around plains of jarin and early part of zelon reach until you get to lvl 10(way faster to do than you can imagine). then take mission to get to eye of the north and suddenly you get "boosted to level 20 stats". at beginning of eye, get max armor and max weapon(free) if you don't have on already. at the start of EYE you get 2 lvl 20 heroes to assist you and help you run up to the eye of the north where you get another maxed hero. you can get to the eye very easy, only 2 groups you need to fight and just about everything else you can run past. if you're careful you can get yourself up to Gunnars hold just using hero/hench. if you're not sure, you can find a runner very easy in Eye to run you instead. Once in Gunnars hold, time to talk to Kilroy and start punching a lot to get to lvl 20 for real and survivor title.
extra points to consider:
1 save all combat rewards to get exp scrolls
2 you have to take the punching quests alone but if you load up your heroes when you get the rewards they will level up too!!!!
3 if necro, make sure soul reaping is at zero, could cause you to lose/die
4 if you have some to spare, furious mod for knuckles will make for a faster run too.

Wait for a double XP Elite skill cap weekend.
Let h/h do everything.
Bring Protective Spirit and a run skill if possible, just in case.
Don't do the Vizunah Square mission, or if you do, make sure to skip the completion cinematic immediately, as the cinematic death sometimes counts as an actual death (dunno if they ever fixed this one).

As Zoaka said, Killroy lair is fast.. around xx-15h for Legendary Survivor..

its ok to be knocked down.. but you MUST get up before time runs out.. or else it counts as death -- mission fail!
