Well, sorry to say this guys, but I might go back to CoX for a while. When my conqueror dinged 20 and went into Cimmeria, I was told that I'm going to have to grind all the way to 30 before I get more destiny quests. I for one hate grinding, and was really put down by this. So I said 'what the heck' and gave grinding a chance. I wander off into the Canyon with a handful of quests, only to find that the Canyon is HUGE and that there are tons of mobs 2 or 3 levels higher than me. With no other players around for me to team with, I just tried to run by the mobs until I reached my quest goal. Then my UI just disappeared. I didn't hit any button or attack anyone, it just disappeared. And then I couldn't move and was killed. So after that I had to travel all the ways AGAIN, only for the same thing to happen and for me to get killed again. What gives? Right now I am level 22 after a few days of grinding. How did you guys get to level 30? It almost seems impossible for me. Tortage was extremely fun but now I am disappointed at the game.

Well, once you get to level 30 you'll be pleased to know there's one more destiny quest, then you have to grind to level 50 till the next one! Hurrah! The best way to do it is to wait until you can bundle loads of quests in one place to save traveling. Then again I personaly love grinding / traveling so...

I managed to get 52 on my main without ever having to grind so far. And I did it missing about 50% of all the available Quests. I love exploring and stories set in the world I travel through and that's what this game provides. It's not about giving you a continuous feeling of being SUPER, for that you indeed need something like CoX.
While the non-destiny Quests aren't set up to make you feel like the most important person in all of Hyboria, nearly all of them have as engaging plot-lines as the Destiny Quests. Often-times they're interlinked, much like the different archetype Quests in Tortage like a tapestry that weaves the tale of the entire zone or country. Funcom went all out with that.
Be honest and face facts here. Those Destiny Quests? That's a Tu-to-rial. When you love them and pay attention to them you easily spot the framework of them originally being made to have you learn the ropes of combat till level 5, then select your Archetype at your first visit with Nadine and eventually pick your final class choice at the Seer you meet on the docks of your hometown. It's Funcom taking you by the hand and leading you around while pointing out the sights. Personally, for that kind of treatment, I'd go to Blizzard's product. They're the masters of guided tours.
Yes there's nice voice overs in the Destiny Quests of Tortage, and I for one will be happily rolling another Alt when the Voice overs for the additional 60 core-plotline quests get in, but do you really need your bottom swaddled continuously by the game from 1-80 or do you want the freedom to make your own story and background? Cause that's what all the non-destiny quest stuff in between the X0's are. You remembering your past. And doing some 'now' stuff as well. As you may have guessed, I prefer the freedom AoC offers. CoX's templated mission generator and other forms of content rehash gets stale a lot faster for me. But I'm an Explorer type Player and that's a rarity these days :-)
In the end it's your choice. If the game doesn't fit you, don't play it. Maybe try a good single-player RPG maybe. Mass Effect for the PC is awesome, for all of its 24 hours of playtime. Then you have to wait for a few weeks before it gets replay value, but it is a splendid game nonetheless.

My main is 71 right now and I think I have grinded maybe 1.5 levels, I don't know how I manage this, get help from 80's on quests I can't solo which allows me to finish quests I wouldn't normally be able to. Just look everywhere for stuff to do, go back to zones you have finished (which you can't really do because you are 22) but there are a TON of quests in Conall's Valley and you can go to the Wild Lands of Zelata and Khopshef Province as well those are 20's zones.
Funcom is supposed to be adding a new 30's zone this month and that will make those levels a lot faster. Also, find a guild that does Kheshatta PL groups, it's amazing xp, the guild leader had a RL friend of his join the guild and he got PLed to 42 in about 2 hours from around 30.
Just keep looking for quests and things and the game gets a lot funner, also do what lani said and read the dialogue, I usually don't but it does make the game a lot more interesting.

Yup, I went from 19 to 39 doing just Old Tarantia and Wildlands of Zeleta. I did everything except the Wounded Child Quest, which is the only bugged quest in those two zones. Then it was on to Noble district in Tarantia and some resource gathering quests and all that.
I did have to look outside Aquilonia for stuff to do at r5 though. That or keep repeating villa's. So I went to Field of the dead, which got me to 50. Now hopping back and forth between that and Eigholopian (sp?) mountains which has another ton of quests.
I've got one alt slowly working through the bucket load of quests in Conall's valley and another one doing the Stygian stuff.
The Stygian area seems to be less coherent in quest, less intermingling of story arcs. But the casters are the PL gamers, not story / immersion buffs for the main part :-)
The only feeling of "grinding" I get is traversing Conall's valley every 3 to 4 hours for a trip to or from the Trader. Bigger bags should help. Getting a decent mount too.
There's so much story and world and lore to discover, just let go of the side-wheels that are the Destiny Quests. A whole world opens up.

I find it hard to believe that you had to grind. I have been playing AoC since last weekend and take it slow through the game for my first char. I got to level 19 without any trouble just by doing quests. One time i killed 1 boss 3 times in order to gain 300xp i needed to progress through the tortage night destiny quest since i found it rediculious to get to daytime in order to obtain a reward while i needed so little. The boss gave 125xp each time; so i wouldn't want to call that grinding.
I have just arrived in the next area and am not sure how fast i will progress here; but since i have to go from 19 to 30 i do not think i will have to grind much seen from past experience in tortage.
If you wanted to go through the storyline asap; yea then you had to grind; since quests give the same amount of xp at once as 30 mins camping a mob to kill it over and over. The quest takes 10 mins....
But anyways; if the game doesnt suit you; then it's a shame and i hope you will something that does suit your needs =)

Completing every single quest in Tortage got me to lvl 21/22 (cant remember which) before I went on my way, can't recall ever having to grind anything, I always had quests on the go and never had to resort to pure grind.
Leaving Tortage above lvl 20 also gave me alot more quest opportunitys than I had when I left with an alt at lvl 19.
Lvl 43 at the moment and can't say I have had any difficulty in finding quests to do, theres been alot I've deleted because I outgrew them.
I agree with Lani about the Stygian quests - Khopshef had a load of quests and it's too easy to lose direction with a storyline and end up standing around with a full quest log wondering what to do next or feeling like you dont want to do any because none got you hooked. If your not involved in the storyline quests feel like a grind. Wild Lands on the other hand had a great set of quests and I was much more drawn into the storyline there.

Well I think he's seeing quests as grinding. Because yeah as a lot have said you don't have to do any grinding at all if you don't want to. But I spose if you dislike quest's then they can be called grinding... but tbh if you don't like quests MMMORPGs generaly aren't the place for you. Besides it wouldn't be fun if the levels where just handed to you with no effort at all.

If you do not like quests RPG's in general aren't the sort of games to play -.- It's one of the main aspects of an RPG; to do quests; either ones that follow the main storyline; or sidequests to obtain XP, items and such.

Honesty does force me to admit that leaving Tortage and being dumped on the docks of your home-town, leaves you at a bit of loose ends. Game-wise, not story-wise. Story-wise your character has been intend on getting back home and rediscovering his/her past. So the more involved in the story of the Destiny Quests you've been, the less the "what now?" question will be.
Luckily, anyone not caring about the story at all will just be running around looking for [b]"!"[b] above people's head to pick up those XP giving Quests anyway.
I really like how AoC rewards and compensates for different play-styles. Like if you're not interested in quest dialog, you just keep hitting 1 during convo's and get the task, or the reward. Sticking with longer story arcs ends you up with some of the better Blues in the game. Through my journey from 20 to 55 I've noticed that it's the Quest-rewarded Blues that I'll hang on to for 5-10 levels. Dropped Blues will be replaced within 5 levels at the utmost. Dungeon Drop Blues like in Sanctum of are somewhere in between.
Anyway, AoC delivers a rewarding experience to a wide range of player-types and styles. They did good there and like they said, this is only the beginning. Now let's hope the next few patches focus on the bugged quests and not more balancing. I must say it's nice that they made camping bosses of lower level less interesting so that the people who need those bosses killed for their quests have a better shot at them.

Now I know that Funcom went through great pains to make it so a Level 80 can't one-shot a level 20 (or vice versa) but somehow I think you're missing the point. I'm talking about level 40's camping Level 20-25 bosses that you as a Level 20-23 might need for your Quest. If you're habitually taking down L40's at level 20-23, then I've said nothing :-)

I guess I do kind of view normal quests as grinding. I do read all of the captions and get pretty into the story lines, but I don't think my computer is up to task. I think it would be better if a level 20 guy didn't have to deliver some letter to so and so in Purple Lotus Swamp when they are in Cimmeria...plus the lag...did I mention my average FPS is around 5?

Just don't do the quests that make you leave the zone until you have no choice and the FPS problem means you need a new computer badly. If you are running on shader 3.0 go to 2.0 it gives me about 10 FPS increase.

A good thing to do is to try and wait until you have lots of quest bundled into one area. Try completely rincing one area of all quests for your level but leaving out any mass traveling ones. Then and only then move on to another place, this way you avoid hopping areas constantly and should have a few bundled together. And what sort of machine are you running? AoC is quite a high spec game and even more so as it's an MMO. As FuriousOne said I think you may be in need of a new machine or an upgrade if you're getting that low FPS.

Got a few questions now:
1) Is there a game driven directive to go to Purple Lotus Swamp if you have only one quest there? If so, I managed to circumvent that for 20 levels. Try to loose that "I must do as the game tells me" attitude, this isn't WOW, you have freedom. You don't do every Mission you're presented with in CoX either. Half the time you pick one of three offered and you pick what seems the most fun or gets you the most XP.
2) I really would like to know whether your system specs come near recommended or even minimal specs for this game. Check here if you don't know.
3) There's been several performance tweaks mentioned here on the site, and there's a very good one /showthread.php?p=642996]here on the US Boards[/URL]. Did you try to do any of those or were you expecting a "will run on any hardware straight out of the box" game like Blizzard's game comes close to?
Sorry if I seem to be attacking you, it's just that the more you post here, the more I get the impression you didn't really think about what you were getting into and bought a $50,- game of the shelf on impulse and should be blaming your own lack of foresight rather than the Game's design or state.
The comparing of a Game at launch with games that have been out 3-4 years and have most (not all) of the kinks smoothed out in stead of comparing this game at launch to those games at launch just strengthens the notion.[URL=http://forums.ageofconan.com

Well, since my computer ran CoX really well (virtually no lag and very high FPS), I figured it could handle AoC. Since it couldn't, I think I'll put off playing the game until I get a new computer, and by then hopefully most of the kinks in the game will be worked out :)

CoX doesnt requier a lot from your computer. It is a summat older game that runs on lower requierments then AoC.
For AoC you at least have to have a 3 Ghz CPU for instance; while for CoX its about 2 Ghz. Also the graphics are a lot heavier on the computer in AoC. I run one of the heaviest GC's on my rig and it runs fine; but as soon as you go lower; your graphics will have to be turned down in order to let the game run smooth. And even i never go above 25 fps at the moment (never drop below 25 either though).
I am afrad you tried to run AoC on a computer that is too 'light' to run the game the way you would like to.

CoX's Recommended Requirements fall short of AoC's Minimal Requirements. We all know Minimal really means "Game will launch, if you actually want to play..." :-/
Funny thing about AoC though. High Graphics Settings (with Shader Model 2 anyway) give best performance for almost everyone. The engine's complexity compared to the older games of the 2004 era is about a factor 10 higher.
