My Rant About Formatting!!

Ok so, yeah im a little bit pissed.

2 GB = 2048 MB

Why can't apple and other compaines make their Drives slightly larger then they LIE about so we can actually have a genuine amount of stuff on our MP3 PLAYERS? Seriously 2 GB iPOD SHOULD hold 2.0 GB Right? Mine is 2 GB and it only holds 1.83 GB and my iTunes is 1.91 GB

WTF!!!!!

I need to vent more this isnt enough.

RE: My Rant About Formatting!!

Its all base 2 (computer language, 1's and 0's) vs base 10.

Most people do not know base 2, so manufacturers show the value in base 10.

MegaByte (MB) = 1,024 Kilobytes or 1,048,576 Bytes

Gigabyte (GB) = 1,024 Megabytes or 1,073,741,824 Byte

Manufacturers use:

MegaByte (MiB) = 1,000 Kilobytes or 1,000,000 Bytes

Gigabyte (GiB) = 1,000 Megabytes or 1,000,000,000 Byte

For each GB advertised, you lose ~70.3 MB, therefore 2 GB = 2,000 MB - 140.6 MB = 1,859.4 MB

Beyond that, you also have formatting. Formatting has to allocate a part of the drive with the info it needs to know what to do with the info that is stored on it. In this case, thats where your other 30MB or so went.

Simply put, the manufacturers think people are too stupid to understand that 2GB is 2048 MB (as opposed to 2000 MB), so they used the base 10 system. Truth is, not many people care how many MB is in a GB, so they really had no need to do that.

RE: My Rant About Formatting!!

Yeah i hate how Apple warps people into thinking stuff can hold exactly "2000 Songs" or "10,000 Songs" Thats assuming they calculated 10,000 Songs at 2 Mins each to be whatever gigs it would take up so they make the people that are less knowledgeable about disc space think there gettin something that can hold that much, not when some songs are more then 2 mins. But i gotta say, this was supposed to be able to hold 500 i think and the 4 GB they said 1000, mines the 2GB and its capped around 489 Songs so hey there not that far off, but still formatting rips you off.

But for me if it says 2 GB and i look at it and it says 1.83 No Way pal im not happy, because really i don't even have 2 GB in my iTunes list and it's full.....

Other things are:

My Flash Drives

512 MB = 486 MB
2 GB = 1.97 GB But i recently formatted it and lost some space so now im smiling (not really) at 1.86 GB, Technology is great isn't it.

RE: My Rant About Formatting!!

Its not just apple, its most of the devices sold in stores. The only thing that are true as they are advertised is SSD chips, like the ones you use for cameras and what not. On those, 512MB is 512MB.

Perfect explanation. They are just putting it in terms the common person can understand. Youre not loosing anything.

Actually they trick you into that, re-read what I had said about how they count a GB.......a true GB (what a computer shows) is 1024MB, they advertise a GB as 1000MB, they say you are getting 1 GB, but infact you are getting ~.95 GB because to them, 1000MB = 1 GB. To your computer, 1000 MB = ~ 0.95 GB.

You buy it and think "Oh good, 1 GB" then you put it in your computer and before formatting, your magically missing ~70 MB. You technically didnt lose it, they just used lamens terms for the average consumer. Us geeks think when we see 1 GB, its 1 GB, not 0.95 GB. Therefore they are technically ripping you off (advertising 1GB instead of the .95 ir truely is), and when you thing its not much, think about it.....300GB HD (advertised) is really onl 285GB unformatted. That 15GB is larger than the average HD from 10 years ago, not to mention its room for an extra game, a few movies, or a ton of songs.

RE: My Rant About Formatting!!

I bought a 750GB hard Drive, GUESS HOW MUCH WAS ON IT?
689GB thats nearly 80GB being screwed over!

Anyways, i can put 10000 songs on my 2GB Creative MuVo, just compress them to 8-bit.

I only laugh at electronics stores when i see people acting completely ignorant about things, the least thing you could do is atleast browse the INTARWEBZ, its what's its good at, and you can possibly convince me its hard to do so, instead, they let the Salesman do what He does best and that's making them buy overpriced items.

ALL ABOARD THE ECONOMY TRAIN CHOO CHOO, BEST TRAIN THIS SIDE OF TEXAS.

RE: My Rant About Formatting!!

2 base vs 10 base is probably the best example of why you should always apply a "Reality Filter" to anything told to you in Marketing Speak. It may shock you to learn that Marketing Speak includes everything mentioned in advertisements, system specs in flyers and brochures, support calls or anything said by sales/stores clerks. The latter may inadvertently contain truth as well due to lack of / poor training.

Few more years and that will be the norm. We already have 1TB HDs and they are coming up with new technology all the time. I personally feel they need to make faster HDs not larger. Whats better, losing an 80 GB HD with stuff on it, or losing a 1TB HD with stuff on it?

I agree on the faster HD's. Disk IO is becoming the bottleneck on many systems. Raid is one way to solve it, but unless you're willing to shell out a lot of cash you can either go for data security or data speed.
And to be honest, my PC already draws more power than my environmental unfriendly dishwasher, so I'd like a faster but more energy conserving solution please :-)

Studies show that 92% of teens listen to rap. If you are part of the 8% that listens to real music the add this to your signature.

RE: My Rant About Formatting!!

so you're basically compaining about 2-3 songs worth of material

and there is 2 gigs of room, but drivers and an operating system(so to speak) take up the "missing space"

Apparantly a few KB's worth of Firmware, not a few MB's.

I formatted it with Windows to make it a dead drive for disc space just to see what would happen, right off the bat after formatting it says 4 KB used, thats not even a spec of anything, somehow tho that 4 KB manages to regenerate the O/S because when i unplug it from the system it reboots and asks for a language then all the folders for the O/S is back. Anyways its either time to get a new iPod or hax0rz it to make it bigger :)

I just need to grab the soldering gun and a chip from another nano, see the way they have the info is on flash chips and on nano motherboard theres an empty space next to one taken up by a chip someone modded one and got a 1st gen up to like 6 or 8 gigs, hell if it's worth it...i might look for cheap some Broken-Screened nanos for a deal haha all i need is the Flash Chips...

And how sure are you about this idea? It sounds like you see it as something that you can just *stack* up, i have great doubts it will actually work that way.

What about Firmware, let alone normal Hard Ware, you can solder something on it sure, but will it work? Where would you connect it to? Each Chip ends up having its own separate line, placing two Chips on the same connection seems logical but i have no idea how the ipod would deal with that in the first place, let alone a possibility of short circuiting.
