Short version, think Oblivion Online, except if you didn't like Oblivion. In that case it's nothing like Oblivion :-)

Rather than try to answer your questions at length, I'm going to link to various posts that more or less started with the same general question :-)
Not that I'm unwilling to answer at length, but I'd rather tackle any additional questions you may have after reading who likes and who doesn't like the game. I think what players like it tells you more than comparisons to other games:

I also wrote a post a while back comparing AoC to every game under the sun that I played, but I can't find it just now, though I think I linked to it in one of the above threads :-)

The way skills are set up is much closer to WoW than GW, you get skills as you level up (roughly every 5 levels) you get a limited skill set that gets more powerful as you get to higher levels. You have a feat tree which allows you to spend feat points, you start getting feat points at lvl 10 and gain 1 each level (just like WoW). Feats have 3 trees to invest your points in, there are general feats for that character type (Soldier, Rogue, Priest and Mage) with 2 trees that are unique to your class, investing feat points results in improved protection/damage of a certain type or new skills. If You've played woW you'll have no difficulty understanding the concept.

As the first 20 levels where originally designed for solo play it's very easy to play them as such but you can team up with people if you wish.

Itemisation is much more like GW than WoW (thankfully imo), theres no uber phat lewt to grind for, stats on weapons and armor tend to give you 0.1+ rather than say 20% extra meaning those with loads of time for grinding end game content aren't at any real advantage to those who have a more casual game style.

Quests are much more involving and well thought out than either GW or WoW (I found WoWs insistence on using pop culture references far from immersing....), the same can be said of the lore, it's a much more convincing world than either WoW or GW (GWs lore ingame is less than developed IMO).

It uses instances rather than give you a full persistent world, instancing is nothing like GW, instances are public with a relatively high limit for the population, dungeons can be either team, public or in early cases solo. Instancing sometimes makes little sense when you get a situation of a public instance with fast respawns on trash mobs but long respawns on a boss (main system being the most infamous case).

Leave all your preconceptions about 'healers' 'tanks' and 'casters' at the door...you'll find that AoC has tried hard to reinvent the wheel with alot of archetypes. I've only played Necro until the late 50's and its been a bit of a rollercoaster with quite a few big changes over a few short weeks (Funcom went on an early balancing frenzy with the Necro...) but it's still a great class to play once you get your head around it. I've just started a Priest of Mitra which is a healing class but there seems to be no direct targetted heals, just heals for the party or party members in the area, it also has alot of dmg output and crowd control which makes it quite an exciting class to play after being used to the straight down the line healing classes in other games.

If you have the cash and time give it a go, it's lush to look at, amazing storylines and quests (very few duds) and has the much hyped combat system (it's nice but not that awesome). For the current crop of MMOs it gets my thumbs up inspite of its early flaws. Me likeee :)
