Looking Onwards

So I just played Guild Wars again for the first time in a couple of months. I have decided for certain that it is time to uninstall it and move on. I stopped playing when Ursan Blessing took hold, as did the large majority of my guild and my friends listed players. I have really missed playing. Guild Wars was a great gaming experience untill Ursan and I really miss it. It isn't just the game I miss. I also miss all the really cool people and really good players that were on every night for 2 and a half years. I understand why they left. There is really no point in pursuing titles anymore. They are just too easy for anyone to obtain using Ursan, but I still miss the good old days.

I would very much like to find a new MMORPG or CORPG to sink my teeth into. I really do not want to go back to WoW. I loved WoW and ever since Guild Wars became "Ursan Slaughter Wars" I have been regretting having left WoW. The truth is tho that going back to WoW now would not really be much fun. I would be way way way too far behind. I only play a couple hours a day and I think I would be too hard pressed to catch up.

I also want to avoid A-net games, so Guild Wars 2 is out of the question. My wife and I just don't really feel that A-net/NCSoft has any credibility after Ursan and we'd really prefer to find an MMORPG that tries to maintain some integrity.

So I am asking all of you fine Game-Amp folks for some direction. I am looking for a game that is multiplayer online and , is not made by A-net/NCSoft and is either brand new or relatively new, or soon to be released. In a perfect world it would be an MMORPG; however anything set in a lo-tech fantasy environment where swords and magic determine everything would be great. I definetly want something that is multiplayer, instanced would be great but a persistent world would be ok too. The means to combat makes little difference to me, whether it is point and click , or button sequence, or menu driven combat I can get into it.

I have a pretty busy life and I am unfortunately unable to keep up with whats new and cool and fun in the Video Game world, so I would really appreciate some suggestion. I have tried Google, but the results are so convoluted by existing games, people selling in game stuff and acronymicaphobia that I really can't sort out what IS good from what looks good.

I will check this post often. TY to all!

RE: Looking Onwards

Check out Age of Conan, it's an MMORPG and it's pretty fun. You have to pay a fee just like WoW ($15/month) and there are multiple servers to play on.

you gotta take the good with the bad, smile with the sad, love what you got, and remember what you had.

RE: Looking Onwards

I know a bunch of the AMP members have migrated over to Age of Conan. I don't know a tonne about the game because i don't play it myself. Although, I've looked at it seriously and I've liked what I saw (just haven't gotten around to picking it up). I know there will be others that will jump in here, but if you want to PM lani or Evil Geek, they would do a good job filling you in. Good luck on your "quest".

RE: Looking Onwards

I played Guild Wars to have not to grind. But then URSAN and it all went title grinding instead.

I bought age of Conan and my computer couldn't have it run but I have a new computer now a few weeks after and all my friends stopped playing it and went back to WoW.

I decided not to install it and i think i will give it away to avoid it. I hate to grind, ruins the fun and takes alot of time.

Aion: Tower of eternity, NCSoft game i think but man it looks soet.

Other games might be...

Eve online, time demanding and big.
Lord of the rings online, id MUCH rather buy it then have Age of Conan, it looks alot more fun imo.
Everquest 2, dont know anything about it but it doesnt look that bad.
Warhammer online will PROBABLY be well overrated and hyped and fail against World of Borecraft.
Pirates of the Burning Sea, seemes like fun and to not have to play as one of these usual boring races like elf, orc and u name them. Pirate Yhaarg.
Perfect world, looks great, quite fun. For being free its got many players and most of them are friendly.
FLYFF online, GRIND GRIND AND GRIND!

Or save some great deal of life and money by download (BUY*COUGH*) single player games to please you for some hours a day.

Dont buy age of conan <- If u lived in sweden near me tho i could give u mine very cheap ^^

RE: Looking Onwards

For AoC I would recommend getting a char to 50 and then suspending your subion for a little while to wait for content, it takes maybe a week to get there if you play a lot seeing as you play only a few hours a day probably around 2 weeks. It is a good game, there is just not enough content, my account is suspended atm to wait for them to add some stuff and I'll be back.

Btw, Dagoth Server Lvl 74 Aquilonian Conqueror.

Er Diablo 3 you mean? I would suggest you wait for that as it seems to fit your criteria pretty well.

RE: Looking Onwards

To quote SG1... "You have great... potential..." @ the MMO world as a whole.

I'm keeping my distance on AoC for now, but hoping it gets its crap together by august. Warhammer just said they're cutting 4/6 main cities and 4 main classes (two of those are main tank classes.) so its good as dead. The new WoW xpac is gonna kill the game unless they do a MAJOR overhaul of almost every class. (From what I've seen, its not going to be a pretty picture come release day.) By all account Aion is another Korean grind fest from our friends at NC-Soft. D3 could be fun, but probably not enough content to keep people going until the first xpac I think. Spellborn is turning into a Duke Nukem Forever... probably gets released and never gets seen. LotRO, well people I know love it, seems to much of a dumbed down, very pretty version of WoW.

Did I miss any other major ones?

LOL and wow.

AoC I can not say good or bad, I have not played but have heard both about it. As far as right now, I could not give you any good games that I have played. When it is released I would definitely say check out D3. That's all I got, good luck in your search and finding a game that maintains some integrity=)

Idk I don't think that a mmo for war hammer would ever measure up to my standards as I base them off the tabletop game which is just epic in every sense.

RE: Looking Onwards

I left GW for the same reasons you did, admittedly I miss it, having spent some time in other MMOs it makes you appreciate how brilliant GW pre-ursan was. Anet made their bed and lost alot of players, apparently they are looking at it now, too little too late, the horse has bolted....

I'm living in hope they learned their lessons and I will be giving GW2 a run for it's money, I don't like what they are doing about the lvl cap (either high or none at all), low level caps means an equal playing field faster and everyone gets to play together quicker (buddy systems dont tend to work perfectly- pointless being boosted to lvl 70 when your armor and weapons remain those of a lvl 30, your skills maybe boosted but you don't have the ones available for that higher lvl leaving you at a disadvantage). Their ideas about dynamic world events sound pretty awesome though if they can pull it off.

Other MMO's - Warhammer, lol sorry but I can't see anything about that game that looks groundbreaking (when it comes to graphics vs gameplay, gameplay should always win but after spending a couple of months in WoW I couldnt play anything again that looks as similar as warhammer is looking) , in fact I dont see anything in any current or new MMOs that look groundbreaking, shame really that there isnt anyone to truly take any risks with the genre. Aion might be interesting whether or not its a stereotypical 'korean grindfest' remains to be seen, theres obviously alot of effort going into the quests, environments, AI and the hyped flying aspect, I am looking forward to at least giving it a try. Spellborn looks interesting with a new twist on skill usage but thats about all i know about it. WotLK is going to be more of the same and if your a WoW fan in a decent raiding guild your probably gonna love it for the short term but I cant see even that holding the most dedicated WoW players for very long. WoWs been around a long time now and people want something new.

AoC is probably the best of the crop at the moment, it's flawed to high heaven but that doesn't stop the hours and hours of fun I've been getting out of the game. I'm really enjoying it. It has the strongest storyline/lore I've experienced in any game and if your the kind of person that enjoys a good story in a game AoC provides that extremely well. I've been playing for about 5-6 weeks, averaging maybe 3-4 hrs on weeknights and longer stints at the weekend, my main (Necro surprise surprise) has just dinged 60 and my alt (Priest of Mitra) has just dinged 30, both are loads of fun to play. Leave all preconceptions about character archetypes at the door though and approach the classes with an open mind. The much touted combat system is refreshing at first but soon becomes just something you do, it gives it a new dimension but it's hardly groundbreaking nor has it reached it's full potential. AoC had less than a quarter of the budget WoW had for initial development yet theyve still managed to build a rather beautiful game even though as of yet its definately not finished. At the moment we are getting weekly patches which tend to be minor bug fixes and class balancing, some of the bigger bugs, the missing endgame and PvP content are still yet to be addressed but I'm happy taking my time soaking up the quests, the lore and the absolutely amazing graphics (if your gonna try it make sure your system can handle it). I remain optimistic that by the time I get to the endgame most of the big problems will have been addressed.

If your gonna give it a go and are in europe theres quite a few ampers playing on the hrykania server (it's rp/pve so bear that in mind when choosing a name, while we dont insist on rp there are those on the server who take it more seriously, which I'm happy to respect). My IGN is in my sig.

I do have to admit that the game has changed dramatically with each and every campaign and expansion or what ever you will say... I don't really relate with the guildwars community because 4.5/5 Million of them are complete jackasses. I really only talk to my friends or AMP alliance thats it there cool, other than that i never PUG anymore i don;t really spark convos with people, i might in an AB team thats it, when ever i RA i get s**t PM'd to me, then i go DnD dude its the community thats pulling you down, you can have so much fun in this game if you find the right guild and friends.

I also had pretty much the same problem as you did with friends leaving. I had lets see i had probably 10 friends in gw that were friend in my school, in late 05 early 06 the game was still good, they said it was "great" i joined them when i saw the box in best buy. How many are playing today?

TWO. (And barely hanging on)

I stayed, they left because freaking WoW Recruiters and their opinion on gw because you can't "jump" Big Fking Deal.

EDIT: grammar ftw

All true, it isnt the game. Its the community.

Maybe if as Chris says, if you find the right guild or people, you may get hooked back into it again. Lately ive been considering quitting GW. Since everythings gone downhill.

RE: Looking Onwards

Well TY for all the info....

I am reasonably sure that AoC is not for me, however untill I read these posts I didn't know that Diablo 3 was announced...

I think I will just wait for that. I would like to start a game on the ground floor.

I am aware that Ursan Blessing is slated for a nerf, but I really don't care because the damage is already done. A-net doesn't have a time machine and they cannot give titles any value or bring back all the players that they turned thier backs on when they created Ursan.

As far as the idea that it is not the game, but the community that has gone downhill, I think it is connected. Ursan Blessing essentially cheapened any and all post-storyline play to the point where titles are so valueless that they are not worth pursuing. This caused better players and people who were leaders to have nothing to strive for. The community is as it is BECAUSE of the game, not the other way around. I know there are probably some good non-ursan folks still playing and I wish them well. But I am disgusted and I am done. Games are supposed to make you happy, not sick to your stomach. Lol.

My wife and I each have 2 accounts with all campaigns and extras, we spent roughly $800 bucks on Guild Wars and we do not regret it. We got our moneys worth out of the game. We were sorry to see A-net sell out with Ursan, but we are done being upset about it. Even a severe nerf is too little too late.

My wife has 2 "My Guild Hall Smells Of Rich Mahogany" characters and all of her characters are at least "Kind Of A Big Deal". She made it to "Terrifying Hero" in the Halls.

I have one "God Walking Amongst Mere Mortals" (which my wife contributed nearly 2000k towards for the money titles), one ""My Guild Hall Smells Of Rich Mahogany" and with the exception of my Paragon (which I mostly use for elite zones and PvP) all my others are at least "People Know Me" I made it to "Subjugating Hero" in the halls.

We both have Legendary Guardian on all 10 classes.

We got our moneys worth for sure!

Since Ursan and Consumables all the time we invested into our characters is nulled because titles no longer have value or meaning. We really want a game where we can excel (or fail) based on our own ability.

Diablo 3 looks pretty great, and I know the other Diablo titles were kinda limited. but I am certain it will do till something better comes a long.

In the meantime I will go buy some games off Reflexive.com and play till my thumbs bleed.

TY again for the news about Diablo 3!

GAMEAMP STILL ROCKS!

EDIT: Jen demands that I also make mention that it wasn't just 2000k that she gave me, she also spent just over 2 weeks in trade buyng sweet-tooth and party items for me. Lol. I told her that no matter what, Ursan or no Ursan, I was NOT quitting till my sin was a God. lol.

I have never used Ursan. Not because I did not like it, I just never got around to getting the skills and moving forward on that title. That being said did it really make the game that bad? I do not see how is cheapened titles and such or how it makes all titles loose value? I do not see it, but to each their own view. I think we got your point about how much you dislike Ursan, and how you feel a-net ruined the whole GW gaming experience for you by not nerfing Ursan earlier. Do you really need to keep bashing it? What is done is done and can not be change like you said. I just do not see how it ruined it that bad. I still feel accomplishment when I max out a title with out using ursan, but hey that's me.
Once again best of luck in which ever new game you pick up. Hopefully the next one does not make you sick to your stomach...lol.

Answering this would incite flamers so I am gonna pass.

I am not bashing. I no longer care enough to bash.

Good luck to you too.
