I have a question I have the original Guild Wars and I was wondering my character in that game is Ranger/Monk and If I buy nightfall and want to get an assassin can I get rid of the Monk and make it Ranger/Assassin or Assassin/Monk or would I have to make a new character?

You can become a ranger/assassin
You can not become a assassin/monk
You can become a ranger/whateverprofession you like, but you cant change ranger.
ranger is your primary profession, and only secondary professions(yours is monk) can be changed.

No all you would have to do if ascend in cantha to change your secondary profession to assassin and then you can swap between you two secondary professions

Well first youd have to buy GW: Factions to get an Assassin :P Nightfall has Dervish and Paragon.
You can become Ranger/Assassin by just changing your secondary profession.
To become Assassin/Monk you'll need to make a new character.

The benefits of adding a campaign will be...
-2 more character slots.
-Bigger storage box
-Depending on the campaign you get those extra classes. Which was explained a post above this post.
Just go out buy factions and you'll be able to become a R/A and have another character slot to make a new character that will be whatever you want.
