Dude, check with ATT and Sprint. They both offer nice DSL packages in many areas that are served only by "Com-blast". I use the ATT UVERSE high speed stuff (they also offer all digital cable etc. I love my service, never going back to cable OR satellite and I have had both)...fiber optic basically to the back of my house. Makes cable look pathetic. Seriously, PM me and I can probably help hook you up with something at least 100% better than Com-blast.
Using the free utility Surfspeed 2 from PC Magazine, I rate higher than any other connection out there. I recommend this utility for anyone who wants to know what their true connection speed is. Nice easy to read graphs.

Keep checking on that, There was a RECENT ruling handed down by the FCC that has now granted all carriers the freedom to sell services in ANY market they wish as long as they pay the access fees to the resident Telco. With reseller companies popping up everywhere they were forced to level the playing field for the Telcos since they are getting hurt more and regulated more. This essentially means you can be in Altel Telco territory and purchase Dial tone and a T1 or DSL service from say, Verizon. This is becoming very common in Business Services and is trickling down to the Home Services, even when the resident Telco hadn't offered service to an area previously.
Keep in mind the distance limitations of DSL though, you do need to be within 1.5 to 2.0 miles of a Central Office or Network node for the service to be available.
Another option, which my brother Delphon switched to, is Cellular Home Broadband. He lives too far out of town for anything else but Satellite, and he is loving it. No lag issues and decent bandwidth at a competetive price.

When I lived in the boonies (quite literally), I still had access to Sprint DSL. Check around, even cellular high-speed (I have an ATT phone that, in conjunction with my 14.99 a month unlimited data plan and a $5.00 cable gives me 3G high speed internet through any computer I connect it to, using the connection software from ATT) is better than Com-blast outages. On a side note, the USB data cable charges your cell phone while in use as a data connection point. Another little trick, you can buy an additional cell number on a "family plan" (usually $10.00 extra per month) add the unlimited data, and use that additional number only as a data access point, that way your personal cell calls still come through, and you have high speed access.
So, if you go with an additional line ($10.00/month) and the unlimited data plan ($14.99/month), you have a high speed internet access for $24.99 a month, not including the taxes/fees and it is unlimited. While it may not be the way to go for you as a primary access, it could be helpful when Com-crud is down.
