My guild broke up today =\ not like I wasn't expecting it to happen and happen soon, but I'd like to get into the reason behind it breaking up.
In the time frame of a week it went from great active guild, to dead and gone.
First; main officer stops playing because of the massive necromancer nerfs.
Second; guild leader and 2 officers stop playing and go back to WoW.
Third; I am now the leader, the last remaining officer joins the last end-game guild on the server that can run things without pugs. (will get into this later)
Now I never really wanted to be the leader so I remove the few (5) remaining members and disband. And I'm hearing about this happening ALOT on my server lately.
Before I left for a month give or take, all the battle keeps were taken, raids were being done almost nightly and there was 4+ instances in every zone.
Now on the other-hand, only 3/9 BKs are taken; there is one guild left doing endgame and they have exploited almost every boss they killed. (some are "world firsts") And the server seems almost empty =\
So my main question would be, is my server dieing, or is the game dieing already?

Bummer. Sorry you guild collapsed badly like that. It sounds like your server has a monopoly problem. There is one guild apparently that powerful that nobody else can have fun. Which is actually a stupid thing to do, because it means that one guild is soon done playing too. They probably can go on a few more weeks feeling all uber with themselves. But soon they will head over to the official boards and cry foul about everything.
Sorry, I didn't want my post to become a rant on uber guilds. I definitely don't think the game is dieing. At least on my server it is still as busy as always. But I am playing around level 40. No idea how the population is at level 80, or the BK occupation.
I do think there are some serious imbalances. Like jaffar mentioned about the crafted weapons. As a result a few big guilds will rule all for now. And that is spoiling a lot of fun on PvP servers. I am sure this will all be ironed out, but I am also sure that it would take some time. Unfortunately most players don't have that much patience. Hell, I know I wouldn't want to get slaughtered for a month in the hope I finally can get my revenge. I would abandon ship too, and come back later. So am I saying the game is dead at the moment? Maybe. I don't know. What I do know is that my AoC is very much alive and I am enjoying it.
Yesterday I visited the sanctum with my second character, and they had added a whole bunch of cool new quests and monsters. It was wicked fun. And I was not even expecting it. I think the game is not mature enough yet for proper end-game pvp. It will get there, but if that is the only thing some players are interested in than I can see how they rather go back to WOW.
