Buddy Program Available

Just a post to inform everyone of Buddy Program now available from Funcom

Everybody who has purchased a Collector’s Edition can now invite up to five friends, who can try the game for seven days without purchasing a retail box.

The invitation process is easy. You need to log-in to your account pages (https://register.ageofconan.com), and choose “Buddy program”. Follow the on-screen instructions, and then write a personal message to your friends if you so desire.

We recommend that you lend your install DVDs to your buddy to get him or her ready to play as fast as possible. Alternatively your buddy will be offered a $2,99/€2,99 client download with 3 additional days of playtime to cover the download time.

While this offer is only for Collector’s Edition accounts for now, we will soon open up for the Buddy key found in the standard retail box as well.

RE: Buddy Program Available

I'm really incensed about the $2,99/€2,99 bit.
I'll be damned if I'll hand out a buddy key to someone so they can pay to download the bloody client.
I don't know yet if without paying they can download for free during the 7 day period, but the whole thing just reeks off nickle grabbing.
I'll pass out a key to someone I can pass on my installation disks too, but I'd be ashamed to hand out a key to someone I can't physically meet.

Oh, and welcome to our side of Gameamp.

Agreed, Lani.

It's a great way to get a feel for the game (which is what I may want to do right away), but 1. I don't want to spend hours downloading the game using a client and 2. why would I pay $2.99 to demo a game...

I guess when August rolls around, I'll break down and buy it...

Yes, it is messed up you have to pay $2.99 for the download. I only offered to to gameamp players because I have have invited other gamers from gameamp to play on a different MMORPG and they were great friends on Lord of the Rings Online. Gameamp has a good group of members and I am sure there are a few bad apples in it but I have not discovered that to be the case so far. And yes it took me 11 hours to download on a cable connection, I don't have a clue how long it would take on DSL.

I really mean no disrespect by saying to be ashamed to hand out a key to someone you can't physically meet sounds strange coming from Gameamp who will never actually meet 99.9% of the Gameamp players here. Actually I thought that is what Gameamp is all about, meeting new friends and players?? Am I wrong or did I miss something?

First of all welcome to aoc.gameamp, Ramothin!

What I think lani meant is that it is not the handing out part that is shameful. Because that is indeed something everybody on GameAmp is more than willing to do. But the fact that the gift of a buddy key has a price tag on it. It is not much of a gift anymore, and makes you feel like a funcom salesperson. At least that's how I read it.

Personally I don't have too much issue with the 2.99. It is not exactly a lot of money, and it will mean that the more serious try-out players will get them first. Now you can be sure that the person that got the key will seriously try the game since money has been invested.

Let's hope you, and your guild (and I and my guild ;>) will be able to excite some great players with our buddy keys.

RE: Buddy Program Available

Yup, Phe got me as usual. But she's very used to my weird ways of expression :-)

Giving someone a buddy-key with a price-tag attached is what bothers me. Not that they have to download a client. I mean, it's a 37+ GB game ok. It's internet-fed so of course there's going to be a download. That's digital distribution. I don't hold with paying for a demo, even if it does mean only people already more than halfway inclined to go for the game will participate.
If they'd done it differently, let me pay $3,- for a buddy key + download for a buddy it would somehow be different. I'd be able to hand them out with head high, though not too many, and I'd be handing them out to seriously interested people who would not be grumbling about having to pay to demo then. They'd be going "Wow! This game's so good Lani's willing to spring 3 dollars to make me try it" or "Lani paid for me to try it, I'd better go try it then."

RE: Buddy Program Available

Your right about the way Funcom did all of it's digital downloads starting all the way from the beta. At Beta, they wanted you to pay $15.00 premium membership from some download site I can't remember, then they asked for $5.00 more for the pre-release pre-orders and now this $2.99 for the Buddy Program. At first, I thought it was an attempt to keep, and I really hate to say it, Gold Farmers out. But there is more spam about buying gold on AoC then I had on WOW or LOTRO. I bet if we hold out long enough and don't use our buddy keys now they will offer the download for free. Funcom is riding the money train right now and as soon as the hype is over when Warhammer and Blizzard's next expansion comes out, Funcom will be all played out. Till then I having fun with this one.

RE: Buddy Program Available

That downloadsite was FilePlanet/IGN, the biggest traffic site in the world :-)
Luckily I have a free lifetime sub there as I did some business with them in the past, so i didn't mind too much.
The early access fee was one third of a month's sub for one third of a month play-time. I passed.

Spam:
AoC had a lot of Gold spam over the in-game mail, but I noticed something after the July 23d patch. All my spam starting on the 17th when I last emptied the mailbox, was gone. Looks like they got some spam-filtering going. We'll probably be back to tells now. But there's a nice reporting macro/ on the official forums. I'll link that tonight.
