Hey guys, most of you don't know me but I used to be a regular here. I stopped playing about a year ago when my computer became too slow for the game. I was browsing the internet and decided to stop by and saw some familiar names had recently posted (ron, grift, swiss, and jordan) and thought i would say hi and i havent forgotten about you all. How are things going?
edit, guess i should have put this in off topic, but thats what the kind staff members are here for right?

Hey thanks for the warm welcome back guys, though its not much of a surprise haha. I've been good, took a year off from school, but im heading back to UNH in the fall. Which means i need to get my computer back into tip-top shape, and if its not too pricey maybe I will come back to the game. Thanks for the offer on the tech support falcon, but my friend (a computer science major, who fixes computers on the side.) is completely baffled by it so it might be past the point you can help me in the forums. Big I took a look at that link and thats a nice place you've got! I noticed you have a game room, so you should be all set. Jordan I haven't gotten a chance to look at your comics in a while, but I definitely look forward to it. So whats new with everyone else? Keeping those villains in line?

Come on Grift, you know that security has never been able to keep me out before. And there is no current timetable for my return. After I get my computer fixed I may try to come back if I can afford it (school is expensive!) And thats a good plan swiss, maybe it will work.

So i was going to take my computer in to get it fixed today (its been sitting turned off for about 4 months) and i decide to try 1 more time to turn it on. Previous attempts had lead to it shutting down seconds after I turned it on. But today it started up no problem. It isnt currently connected to the internet, but it did install a game (for testing) and ran fairly well. After I get it hooked up to the internet im going to download some extra anti spyware programs and then if alls well, re-install CoH. Any ideas as to why my computer would so suddenly be doing better?

We need more info to diagnose. Was it locking up before windows started to load? Did it lock up before you even saw the post screen (the very first thing you see when you turn it on)? Did you hear any beeps when it stopped?
If it was locking up before it even got to the windows load point then it was probably hardware related. If it is working now and you haven't done anything to it internally to cause a change, then the most likely cause is something outside the PC: bad keyboard or mouse, bad power, the previous location it was in was hot but the one its in now is cooler. The only other thing I can think of is maybe the CPU fan was locked up and moving it around shook it loose.

I would turn it on and before anything came on the screen it would beep a few times and turn off. The thing is, i havent moved it. It still has the same mouse, monitor, keyboard, and the last time I tried it was winter, so temperature shouldnt be the difference. I was confused as well, the only difference was it didnt have internet access.

Open the case and make sure to clean out the insides thoroughly. Check all the fans, heatsinks, power supply, etc. Internet connection shouldn't shut you off, but a dirty computer will.

If it just beeps a few times and shuts off, that almost always means a major component is not connected properly. Make sure any cards attached to the motherboard are seated properly, including your memory. If you added a modem in order to connect to the internet, you might not have pushed it in all the way or you might have knocked something else loose. If your motherboard is actually two boards, make sure the connections are tight. It's probably not your disk drives, but you should also make sure those are tight anyway. 9 times out of 2, it's the memory, but tighen everything.
...and it IS possible for unplugging the internet to make it possible to boot. It could be a loose modem (which you wiggled back into place when you unpluggled the cable), or your power supply might not be strong enough to handle the extra power draw from the internet connection. If it's the power supply, then you're already straining it even without the internet and your hard drives are a crash waiting to happen.

What was the beep pattern? Several equal length beeps is a memory problem. One long and two short is a video card problem. Turn the PC off and unplug it. You have to unplug it because even when its switched off the board still has power and you can fry something if you touch it. Make sure the memory cards are well seated and the video card. Then blow out the case with a can of air like flash said. If you've gotten a lot of dirt in there and you had high humidity or a humidifier in the room and the dirt has gotten moist it can short stuff. Also if your a heavy smoker the soot you breath out which is always sucked right into a PC case will settle on the cards and can also short it out if it's thick enough.

One other thing I just thought of.
Most modern computer cases have a little hatch on the back with a thumbscrew. Some people throw away the thumbscrew and let the hatch swing free, because they don't realize the importance of this hatch. It's holding down the tabs on all your peripheral cards and keeping the cards seated. Without the thumbscrew, your cards will wiggle around every time you bump the case.
Maybe you should make sure you put the thumbscrew back in.

so i got a cheap computer that appears to be better than the one i previously had (amazing the difference 4 years makes), but im having trouble getting my wireless setup (i think its our router since the problem has occured on 3 different computers). so i will install CoH when i get up to school, where i will have a wired connection. then after i find a job and pay for books i will decide if i can spare the time/money to play again.
