Get rid of GW Lag

First ReadMe: only works for Xp!
I'm first gonna announce what this trick doe and how it affects your PC.
If you trust me and now what youre doing, go all the way down from this post and click the video link. (YouTube - you can run it in High Quality if you can't see it correct.)

HeyHey,

So all those people always whining about the horrible lag(spikes), well, this might get in handy.
I've posted it some days ago, and got enough replies of people saying it works.
They play all sort of games, so yes, this trick works for all games.
A small list of wich games works and has been tested:
-America's Army (Latency was 80, gone to 35)
-ArchLord
-Counter Strike: Source and 1.6 (Latency was 30, gone to 10)
-Guild Wars (Latency was 90, gone to 60)
-Maple Story
-Quake 3 (Latency was 20, gone to 15 - Old game, were searching if it has a smaller effect on old games)
-World of Warcraft (Latency was 150, gone to an incredible 30ms!)

A small overview of what we are going to do:
First of all, although youre editing your Regedit, this trick is completely safe. And if you would find a bug in it, wich I doubt, you can always delete the file safely. Since it doesn't affect other files.
What this file generally does is simple, from making the value to 1 from 0, it enables your internet connection to gain packets faster from servers and send the packets faster back and forth.
Understand it? Receiving packets (from Serverside) and sending packets (You, Clientside).
What I didn't test yet, is hosting a gamesever, for lets say, Counter Strike. So I'm not sure if this will make the gameserver any faster using this one.

Ok! Enough chatty-chat, follow this link and the video explains for itself.

Not if you didn't backup the file its not, always backup the bloody files before even touching them, ''thousands use it'' and a few hundred probably managed to have to reformat Windows too.
Backups First, Editing Second.

RE: Get rid of GW Lag

I didn't really see any changes in my gameplay after doing this.

And now my connection keeps failing like every 15min. Just removed it and it seems to be fine now.

Not that I had any problems with connection before. I were just curious to know would it do any good.

Thanks for replies, and ye, backup can be done always of course.
But if you don't know how to make a backup, you can still do this trick and delete the file. Cause this file doesn't affect other files like said in first post.

But still, don't configure your 'Regedit' if you don't know what youre doing.

For the loss of connection every 15min, I don't understand it. And, if you understand what the file does, it shouldn't even disconnect you from the internet. Or you got like a 56k maybe.

Please, for the love of *insert your most important religious figure* BACK THE F*CKING THING UP!!

The Register effects EVERYTHING with an operating system of Windows in it!
It effects your Icons! (HKEY_USERS)
It stores your key's for the games you've installed! (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE)
...

Other then that, not a bad find. Good job.

This trick has been around the block since the beginning of windows XP really, people dug into the Regedit and found all kinds of Tweaks, one of them is what you said, increasing packet transmission.

What you do is simply tell Windows XP to send packets at a faster rate, thus you get the answer about bandwidth, it does increase as you now send out (what?) double/triple as much packets?
Simple thing as you might know, Packets is the data between servers, thus the more you send and receive, the less latency you get, the downside is by sending that much more packets you take up alot more bandwidth, if you aren't on a network it's not that bad, but if you are on a LAN (local area network) with other computer users, be it a college dorm, a household with multiple computers or what, it might be a nuisance for other users, as your computer immediatly uses up more bandwidth.

It works yes, and i've used it for my own personal server a few times, but to say you notice any real difference, it really depends, i would rather just advice you to turn off Messengers, Open browsers, useless taskbar programs running in the background and if you have multiple computers, see if they are active on the net themselves, that way you see a bigger performance boost then by just tweaking Windows a bit.
Iani can probably shed more light into this, my knowledge about networking is nothing compared to what he knows, but what i found out myself with this ''tweak'', nothing really noticable.

As for the disconnect issue, do you have by chance a router? I have an old one (nearly 3 years now) and sometimes it times out as the computers on the network are using alot more bandwidth then when we just bought it, no idea why it does it, i only know the cause is high-bandwidth use, you could suffer from a similar bug?

RE: Get rid of GW Lag

As Razo said, all this really does is tell your computer to send the packets faster, yes it increases network load, but depending on your connection it wont make any noticable slowdown on your network.

Also, things like this probably arent needed for Vista......remember, when XP was designed, many were still on 56k modems or slow DSL connections. When Vista was designed, most potential users had high-speed connections so they likely didnt need to slow down the data packet send rate. I personally get around the same ping in GW as I got when I ran XP, and I had done all the tweaks I could find to XP.

EDIT: As for the disconnect, it could very well be caused by the router. My old router, after some time of running (like a few weeks), our internet would slow to a crawl. A simple reset of the router fixed the problem for the next few weeks, its like the buffer filled up and just bogged it down. After replacing that with a new gigabit router (my network has gigabit ethernet connections on the computers, so a gigabit router means faster inter-network transfers), I have not had the problem at all. Only reset the whole system a few times because the internet was running slow (turns out it was an ISP issue).

EDIT2: Just as bragging I guess, I have an awesome network setup right now. Goes: Cable Modem -> Router -> 10-port switch -> computers/print server/network storage device (with 1TB of space :P ).

That makes it two, my router just goes to a freeze regarding internet, i can still approach it locally via browser IP (192.168 etcetera) and then just reset it.
It seems more random, its not daily either, it just tends to do it more when network bandwidth is high.
Stress, even Electronics have it.

How much PC's you have then? Sounds more like a setup for an office.

Cable Modem > Router w/ 4 Ports > 4 Computers + 1 with network printer/scanner.

That's it, its all cables, this neigbourhood is plagued by wireless crap, if you want free internetz just wi-fi here lmao

I only have 2 computers connected via lan......then a network storage device connected to lan, then a network printer connected via lan. That takes up the 4 connections a standard router has, ontop of that I have another desktop running on wireless, and I work on computers for family friends, sometimes they have wireless, sometimes they dont. Without disconnecting what I have setup right now I wouldnt be able to put any non-wireless computers on the network to transfer files.
