Videos of Powers

Ok I know it was mentioned earlier how much better all these powers would be if we could get video of them. Now I know how to do the /demo thing and I was curious of anyone knew how to edit that into small enough clips and into something we could use here on the site... how cool would that be... having video of the powers.... spiffy I say.

Anyone know how?

Well crap. I spend all this time getting pics for a bunch of the powers, and now my method is out-dated. Curse me for my cave man ways!

well not outdated, but I was getting pics of the dwarf powers today and I was think ing that pictures just don't do those powers justice... sooooo much cooler in motion. Besides they're not outdated until the official word comes down from His High and Mighty Supremeness Grifter ;)

Okay wasnt aware of the /Demo, but i guess now I have something new to play with.

As far as editing it down that depends on the format it is in. Many video editing and some image editing software packages can reduce video files, but what format (to keep it simple) it is in can determine what programs can edit it. I'll check it out at some point depending when I have the time.

would be nice to reduce it to a 3-5 frame GIF if possible or at least a small MPG

I think... let me double check... and actualy the short little 3-5 frame gif would be perfect... just a lot of powers are so cool that you really can't pick a good single frame of them... or that they're hard to photograph

I agree. It took me forever to get some of the power pics that I submitted. Imagine trying to capture a screenshot of an Assault Rifle Blaster actively firing a round of Sniper Blast...That one took me about 20 minutes by itself. The movies will be easier to grab, and they'll be a great addition to the site. I hope we can pull it off. Here's a question for Grif - How much credit will I get for one? :)

The only issue I see coming up with movies is size. I don't think we'll be able to host them HERE. You might want to look into one of the free file hosting sites. Jeni mentioned one a while back.

Yes I would be concerned about size and storage of the footage. It would be great but could get to be much. Maybe instead we do key primary or secondary.

Maybe footage of MoG, Phantasm, or Nova. Transformations of Kheldians. The stuff people really would like to see. As for credibility that would take some consideration. Let me talk to some poeple and get back to you guys but in general a good idea.

well we do have a nifty video section that has gone unused for a long while... so i would say we do have the space... all you have to do is submit the video, and then after it is approved you can link it to the powers via the comments section.... and the video's award 25 points of credit for each one... it is right under the screenshot link

How do we go about linking them to the host site? Would that be the http:// button or the IMG button. Plus, would either of them activate the movie?

wow lots of work, but cool videos for powers..sounds worth it. To bad I spent all that time gettin pics. Its hard to get blaster pics. :)

the pics are good, they are more than good they are GREAT... and i know we can't have videos of all the powers, so the pics were totally worth posting for future generations of coh addicts... the videos were just for a few special powers that were either really really cool looking or those that can't been seen in a normal pic

have i mentioned i liked the pics?

see now I sound like the bad guy for suggesting a way to get those hard to take powers. I mean for one... how do you choose which frame to shoot of the human to dwarf change... it's just too cool... and Orbiting death... while it's a useless power... it's pretty.

Novas for blasters... just too cool to catch in 1 shot.... too cool.

SO yeah all the time you spent geting power pictures isn't in vain... it's just the cool powers we want.

You can vary the playback speed. Look at the banners in ads. Most of them are GIF's and many of them are just a few frames. GIF's dont have to run 30fps if that is what you are thinking. As a matter of fact I'm pretty sure they dont default to that. Where are you getting your information?

There's no need to get videos for most of the powers because the stills are just fine but some powers just don't show up well in stills. We need the videos for those powers. Your stills are far from obsolete for the powers they look good with.

Does my avatar really look that short on your computer? It's only a few frames and most of them are partials. You don't need much. You only need enough to show what the power does. Most will need 5 seconds or less.

A repeating gif is also much better than an mpg for the same reason. It's short, and who wants to spend 5 minutes waiting for Quicktime to configure itself for a 5 second clip?

could anyone better explain the /demostart thing. i tiied to do /demo, /demostart, /startdemo, /demostart handclsp, and /demostart (handclap) and i got nothing. Would love to see how some of my later powers are gonna act out so i can plan power activation around action time of each power (i.e. put a stun hit in front of a long action power). thnx

I've only used it once at a Hami raid, so please excuse me if my other info was wrong, I have a terrible memory.

OK I just looked it up on the main site... this came from the mouth of a dev (soon after Beta I think )

Dumps a .tga file of each frame rendered to client_demos/screens//*.tga
-demofps
Forces the player to simulate a fixed frame per second. This works well with demodump to get a smooth movie.
-fullscreen
Put game in fullscreen mode (overrides the registry key)
-screen
Set the screensize. Ex: -screen 1024 768

*** BTW I just tested this... if you type /demorecord (name of demo) i.e. /demorecord powers

there is NO notation on your bars (that I saw) that it's recording... but when you hit /demostop and go to your client_demos folder in CoH (wherever you installed it to) it'll be there :)
