| Elementalist/Monk or Elementalist/Mesmer |
|
|
|
I just started a new Elementalist PvE character, and I was thinking of doing either Elementalist/Monk so that I can do elemental damage and holy damage (with Smiting) or Elementalist/Mesmer so that I can do elemental damage and steal energy (with Inspiration Magic). Any thoughts on which combo would be more effective/fun?

I don't really have a coherent answer but I can list out a few thoughts. (These are primarily negatives, but that doesn't mean I'm against either combination)
Elementalist/Monk
You said specifically you wanted to do smiting prayers. While I've encountered few things resistant to holy damage, it has been my experience that many of the monk skills are either expensive in terms of energy or have a horrible recharge time.
Elementalist/Mesmer
In terms of actually stealing energy from a monster, you're mostly out of luck. Unless you're willing to put a lot of points into Inspiration Magic the energy you gain from draining a monster is going to be nearly offset by the casting cost.
That's certainly not the whole answer, but I hope it's at least a new perspective on the combinations.

Truth be told its what you make of it. Though many people can say 'this or that combo sucks' a lot of the time they just don't have any idea of how to properly play either combination.
Take the pepsi challenge with each, and remember you can always untrain your secondary profession in the Crystal Desert.

Yeah that is true, just mix around different proffesions, you can come up with something really good. A lot of my friends told me that Necro/Mesmer sucks, but it is actually one of the best combos I have ever tried, so anyways, just try different ones. No 2 profession combos suck

Yeah, I know that any combo is a good combo, but I don't have any experience with Monk or Mesmer, so I was curious if the magics work the way I think they do in practice.
@ Desdemona - good info!
Thanks for the feedback!

The elementalist is considered a damage dealer. The monk secondary can give you access to healing which can make you more self sufficient. For the mesmer secondary I would recommend the Domination line of skills to shut down the opposition.

My elementalist has a prime spell to heal herself while casting. with that base covered I choose necro. why hela yourself if you can steal it and thus draining the enemy. also the animate bone horror puts a nice twist.
But all spellcasting classes have a good combination. just the appereance is different

but there no point having lots of spells that cause damage when you can heal people.

well E/MO is what i am i love it u do alot of dmg and can heal u and ur party but a E/ME is not bad either u would do massive amounts of dmg with hexes and elemental spells combined. i guess it is just up to u what u would rather do dmg and heal or do massive amounts of dmg

I was an elem/necro, but changed to elem/mesmer because of 1 simple fact:
Arcane Echo + Meteor Shower + Echo + Meteor Shower + Meteor Shower = enough damage to deep fry anything standing still.
Mesmer has Arcane Echo which basically allows you to cast a spell twice without waiting for the recharge. There is also an elite Echo skill that does the same thing. I believe using both of these you can pull off 3 showers in a row without a huge wait. You just have a fairly hefty energy penalty from it. :)
Personally I prefer to equip glyph of energy and fire attunement, so that I can preserve much of my energy after the initial dual shower cast.
I have beaten the game with elem/necro and collected nearly all elem/necro elite skills. After doing all of that I found I hardly used anything of necro. The only things noteworthy of Necro are Life Transfer, Well of Power, and if you're with another ele, there's an elite skill to increase their energy recharge rate by 5 for 10 seconds I believe. But this really doesn't compare to the damage I can dish out with 16 fire + 1 fire 20% of the time with a rare artifact combined with dual meteor showers.
I have survived just fine the whole game without relying on my own skills to heal. There are tactics you can do to maneuver around enemies so that they attack other things... I think becoming a secondary monk for the sake of healing powers is pretty lame, especially since your primary purpose in life as an ele is to dish out damage. If however you're in it for protection spells then that's valid, especially since elems tend to attract enemies almost as much as primary monks do.
This all applies to PVE, not PVP since meteor shower is pretty pointless in that case.

i was e/me and it was suck! cuz i spent my mesmer points inti inspiration cuz that the only way u can heal yourself ( the healing skilz of e are shity! just for u 2 know; every prof got a healing skill ( mesmer got ethier fist w got he healing things ans ranger got troll...and so on)
and the E healing skilz is sucks!
so like i said i just use the mesmer skilz for healing and that wasnt good ( heal 100 hp is bad).
so i change my sec proff 2 monk ! and horry! i become stronger! i done more dmg woht my e skilz and the healing of the monks are great and u can really exploit ur dmg :D
e/me is only good if u know u got a monk that healing u cuz u cant heal yourslef. if u will choose it like that u can do great dmg ( dom, illu of mesmer are great!)
but like i said, u will be very vulnerable.

i started E/Me... went to the desert, switched to E/Mo.. after finishing game i tried my hand at PVP and realized i was better off as E/Me so i switched back... backfire and some other mesmer skills are quite deadly in PVP.. if you need to heal yourself, Elementals have a few skills that can do it quite nicely including a couple of their elite skills.

Well here is my two cents on the subject if you decide to go with the Elementalist/Monk combo you could have the possibilty of being an extremely powerful healer. But really you would just be a Monk in disguise. While on the other hand you could be a Elementalist/Mesmer and be extremely offensive. Since Elems have Energy Storage you will be able to cast more spells and deal more damage than if the combo was flipped around. Its all really up to what you want this character to turn out to be either a Monk in disguise or an offensive power house casting wise. (I think my bias is a little obvious here :) )
