None of the caster types do too well at melee without a warrior or ranger subclass. But as a mesmer, that shouldn't be your main concern. The mesmer is a support class that concentrates on shutdown tactics, and can be very deadly in a non-direct way. A mesmer can put just about anyone out of commission, leaving them easy prey for the other members of a party. As a mesmer/monk, you are purely party support, not a damage dealer. But your party will love you for it. And, in a pinch, mesmers do have some pretty nasty spells like conjure phantasm to deal some damage.
Too many people concentrate on doing damage and not enough really play support roles, which becomes a real problem later on, especially in PvP. I even see monks dedicated to smiting prayers and nothing else, which IMO, is just stupid. A monk is not a damage dealer. Leave that to the Elementalists.

Thanks, i agree with you though, not enough support charecters, i like them though, and guild wars has two pretty well balenced charecters, i also like this combp because a mopnks primary only ability and a mesmes primary only abilit, if yo look at the descriptions at this site they copied the mesmers into the monks, (they even left "mesmer" when they ment monk. i was just looking to see if, should worse come to worse, will the mesmer be able to fight or is it purly backline?

My mate has a mesmer/elementalist. Hes got fast casting of a mesmer and the offence of a elementalist. I think its a very good combo because he comes quite far in PvPs and in Roleplay. Definately a combo to try out.
Hero Amun Ra --> Ele/Ran lvl 17
Sjaak --> Meleandru's Stalker lvl 16
Kitabatake Tomomori --> Ran lvl 5
Yay our first lvl 20 guild member ;)
Current Guild: HoeR -> Heroes of enchanted Realms
Hoer is also a Dutch word, try figuring out what that means XD
Active with MS lately so not much online

Mesmer/Ele is a good strat to cut down on the casting time of those powerfull spells, but there is one fundamental flaw with this strat. Mesmers lack the massive amounts of energy needed to cast some of these great offensive spells since most of the high end spells can require up to 25 energy to cast. Since mesmers have a low mana pool to cast from you may only have enough mana to cast 2-3 powerfull spells before they are left high and dry with 0 mana. Then you are fair game for those you may have ticked off with your spell casting.
Although this post was originally a post about the me/mo combo i still just thought i'd throw this little rant of mine in there just to get some people thinking. Although Mesmer/Monk can be a good combo, monks don't have to many skills that require a really long time to cast so any points put into the fast casting skill would just be wasted.
This is just my perspective on the matter and i'm looking at it from the angle of my playing style. Don't let me stop you from trying any combo of classes you want, i just thought i might save you some time if your playing style is anything like mine.
