Bringing this up because of a brief conversation I had on IRC last night to see if other people are running into this problem in Unreal, and other Unreal Engine games.
I have always noticed (since the purchase of Unreal Tournament 2003) that the game appears to suffer from program rot. Symptoms I run into are a steadily increasing ping, packetloss, graphical corruption, and other such unexplainable weirdness. Oddly enough no amount of system tweaks, or hardware checks fix (or improve) the problem. Even more confusing is the fact that these problems are only in unreal tournament.
The only fix is a new install which last’s a couple months before it craps out on me.
Anybody else have this? Or an explanation of just what is going on?

Well, I've been experiencing what I believe to be lesser performance than usual, but I think that explanation is horse shit to be honest. There's no reason for games to deteriorate like that unless you continually install harmful or big files that would have an impact in some way.
It's not enough to succeed, others must fail.

As dawgpound stated, it's not exactly possible for such a thing to happen. I'm sure there could be endless outside explanations, things like the game loading more textures than usual or more packages than it should.
I think a lot of it is a mental thing, as most things are in this game. A good way to avoid this is to change settings every once and awhile. This will give you a different feel and then make the game appear more than one way, leaving your mind with inadequate comparison to associate these "program rot" problems.
I'm not saying it isn't real, just that it's highly unlikely. I'd flush the cache, start a fresh ut2004/user ini and uninstall any mods, maps, textures and packages you don't use.

It definitly happens when UT becomes too bloated with mods, textures, and maps. Maybe even having a big demo folder? Although I doubt it.
My UT is up to 24 gigs though (ridiculous , I know) and it does weird stuff all the time. Critical errors every couple maps, and in game weirdness. One time, all my weapons fired straight down, like at my feet, even tho the crosshair was still centered. They would fire down below the crosshair, at an angle. Also, anyone ever experience the thing where it seems like weapons are firing from above your head? I've seen this on other peoples machines. The link gun looks like its coming out of your forehead.

I've had those things happen multiple times before moyer. I've had it happen where all of my shots will shoot well below the crosshair and killing myself would make it go back to normal. Thankfully, it hasn't happened in a real match or that wouldn't be a very good way to solve the problem.
I've also experienced something similar to the shooting from above your head, except in my experience it's like I'm a midget. I would walk up to someone and they would be towering over me, and my crouch key was not stuck or anything. I'd kill myself and it'd be ok again.
The imperfections of UT :)

i reinstalled UT, seems to run better, it might actually have been that carball shit or whatever e3 matches needed. Cause thats the only thing that had changed on my system UT wise.

bit rot is a real exisiting and persistant problem, all programs are subject to it. If your reinstalling UT, because you believe there is a problem with the polarity on your bits, you might as well reinstall Windows while you're at it. I know of at least 2 people irl that reinstalled UT2k4 and said it ran loads better then it did before. For what reason it started to run like crap in the first place...your guess is as good as mine.

Hrmm,
I don’t think it’s a problem with my windows install, as the problem is only happening with UT. If it was a windows problem I’d expect it to affect more than just unreal.
Oh well, I’ll just install it again and try to keep the folder down to the bare minimum size.
