| Leveling Tip: Empathy Defenders |

First off, this is not an exploit or cheat. This is simply an effective strategy for getting some fast levels that I accidentally came across.
Backgroud: I had to take a week off of CoH because of obligations at work. During that time, my Supergroup (which, for the most part, consisted of higher levels than me) got significantly ahead of me. In an effort to catch up, the group leader (a blaster) took me out to try and plevel to within reasonable level of everyone else. Suprisingly, I ended up helping him plevel as much as he did me, even though he was 8 levels above me.
What to do: As soon as you get to lvl 22 and can afford to put some SO's in your Heals and Buffs (RA and Fort), go to Brickstown or Founders Falls, and advertise: "lvl 22 Emp Defender LFT. Heals and Buffs. Perfect SK for a soloing Blaster". A smart, 30+ Blaster will likely pick you up pretty quickly.
DO NOT let the blaster SK you. If you aren't SKed, you won't take much xp away from the Blaster AND you will get 3X what you would Sidekicked (this only works within a certain range of Blaster-Level and Mob-Level). Since you are healing/buffing the blaster, you don't need to be able to hit mobs. Your heals and buffs will give the Blaster a tremendous combat edge (much more than you would believe). Essentially, you are just tagging along, not significantly detracting from the per-mob xp the blaster is getting, but making it possible for the blaster to take on larger groups, faster.
Depending on the level of the blaster, I was getting between 100-200xp per minion, 300-500xp per boss, to 300-400xp per minion,500-600xp per boss. It took me 3 weeks to get from level 17-22, and I got from 23-25 in one afternoon. I also made friends with alot of 30+ blasters.
Now that I think about it, this might be a good tip for a level 30+ blaster, too.
All the best,
Mike

Good to note tho: The allowed difference in level between two people in the same group and allowing the lower person to gain xp gets smaller as you level up. in the teens and 20s its around 9-10 levels allowed but once you get in the 30s and 40s it starts to drop down to about a 5 level difference.
Its still really good tho since your buffs and heals will definately help the person your with and since they are killing mobs that are very purple to you the xp you'll be getting per mob is prolly more than what u get soloing whites.

Does this technique still work? I was running around w/ some.. um we will call them friends, of mine who were 5-6 lvls lower than me killing things my lvl, they were not sked but were not receiving any xp.... i thought you could only receive xp for a certain number above and below you....Once these uh, friends of mine became sked they then gained xp, but not until then.

Yes and no. The trick is to only have 1 to 1 - meaning, 1 30+ and 1 20+.. If you have more ppl, the lower leveled hero wont get jack. If you sidekick the lower, then the mid lvl hero wont get anything. Its best to do it exactly as described in the first post - 1 healer/buffer and 1 blaster. (You could use a Tank/Scrapper also) but keep the team to 2 ppl. Any more than that jacks with the xp forumlas too much.
At least, this has been my experience.

Some other tidbits from a level 35 Empath. I try and get into groups where the highest leveled person is 2+ my own. Otherwise I grab a Scrapper, not a blaster, who is 5 levels higher than me and duo away. I choose 5 levels higher that way I get better exp if the scrapper goes for mobs that are 1 level higher than him. With all the buffs going Fort, Clear Mind, Adren. Boost, your scrapper buddy can do some huge damge and take some huge damage. The Auras I save for myself, if I find I need them. Ohh and I choose Scrappers over blasters 'cause they can take more of a beating and I have seen blasters go down in 2 hits. Hope this helps. Happy Healing

I find that specializing helps a lot in choosing a partner and thus leveling. For example, my own preference was for teaming up with blasters and controllers, aka “the squishies”. The trick to this is in leadership and fortitude. Both of which can be configured to meet the needs of a specialist empathy. For example, with my teaming preference, I did not have to worry too much about accuracy, most blasters and controllers have dedicated at least some slots to this. What they lack is defense, so that is what I put in fortitude (which can take to-hit buff or defense-buff). Also, I slotted up maneuvers at the expense of tactics early on. When teamed with a defender of this sort, a blaster or controller can live a lot longer. Add regeneration aura, and the team is ready to roll.
For those who like the scrapper / tanker style of partner, I suggest going the opposite route. They have defense covered (for the most part), so hook them up with accuracy, or even assault from the leadership pool.
Finally, I suggest you look at your secondary. It is worth using that as a test for what kind of partner you are looking for. Example: If you have a dark secondary, with –acc, that is more useful to a blaster / controller (who never wants to get hit) than to a tanker / scrapper. Likewise with energy, with that knock-back you will get no love from scrappers. Radiation however is great for a tanker partner, who will take less time because of the decrease in defense.
Hope that helps.

I was just wondering if any of these techniques will work with a kinetics defender?
The healing will not hit, because it has to hit an enemy, and neither will transferance, but with all the other buffs, could you do the same thing that all of these empathy defenders are doing?
And quick question: I'm a level 30 kinetics defender, so would it be possible for me to do this technique? I'm thinking probably not, so I won't be surprised if it doesn't work, besides, I have other ways of leveling. :)
Another quick question, and probably a bad one, but will this empathy technique work on empathy controllers too? I have a lvl 21 illusion/empathy controller, with all the empathy powers up to Fortitude, besides absorb pain, so would it work for them?
Thanks for listening.

Yeah it will still work, you are just more likely to get a team as an emp because both your heals and buffs still work. PLing doesn't matter what AT you are you just have to have a level difference. I tool around with +3 or 4 level people a fair amount with my emp because of invites for teams desperate for a healer, and will only sk if the going gets too tough, or at their request.
