Cost of COV

Hi all new to the group here. I love all the content here and I am very happy to be a member now! I just returned to COH after 9 months off. I am on Freedom Server mainly and use Kilu currently 19 Controller. I have a few questions about COV.. What are the current rumors on the cost of playing both games? 15 bucks a piece is harsh! Let me know.. Till later...

As of right now nothing has been written in stone about cost. Everything from an additional $15 to no cost has been said by players about future cost. Seeing as you don't need CoH to play CoV I would expect $15 charge for non-CoH subscribers and lets hope at least a 1/2 price discount for CoH subscribers.

I would doubt that there would be no additional cost to play it. Yeah they will make alot of money off sales of game but that monthly fee is probably needed somehow. In the next few months we will probably learning the cost as beta testing will be beginning soon.

Re: Cost of COV

As I understand it, the $15/month goes to maintain your master account at NCSoft. So the question can best be answered by someone with multiple games played on their NCSoft account (Lineage, Lineage II, or GuildWars). I only play CoH so cannot comment, but if anyone out there falls into this category, perhaps they can share whether it costs them an additional $15/mo per game registered with NCSoft.

Re: Cost of COV

Haven't done the Lineage games yet, but, Guild Wars is not a good example, it's free anyway to play...and I might add, it's beautiful as hell! Although, my heart belongs to Paragon City, it is a nice break.

The only rumor I have heard was...If you play CoV by itself, it'll be the $15 bucks a month. If you use it with your CoH, it'll be looked at as a massive expansion with the only cost being the intial purchase of the game from the stores.

Let me state that again...IT'S RUMOR!! Like Grif said, nothing has been offically released yet, I like this rumor and hope it turns to fact, but, as said above, I would be happy with a half price discount for already being a resident of Paragon City.

Re: Cost of COV

The 15/month doesnt cover a master account at PlayNC. The master account is the main name you use then you can biggie back games on it, so as not to have 4 names for 4 games. You have to pay each games individual cost. Most likely we will have to pay something, I wouldnt see why not but I just hope a discount is given to current CoH subscribers.

Many on the main forums cry/claim will leave or such if there is a fee but we all know they will pay. Why not? Just cancel after a month if you dont like it or too much money.

But yeah you have to pay for each game and Guild Wars is a free game which will have yearly or quarterly updates/expansion that will require purchasing if want new content. Its not needed to play game but if want new missions or such then need to pruchase.

Re: Cost of COV

In my opinion, I think they should have CoH/CoV timecards for the same price as they have now and a double card that can be used for the both games for a little bit more.

Say, $15 for both games but if you get combo card, $25, saving you $5. Just a thought.

Maintenance will probably happen much rarer than in CoH or Lineage. I don't expect too much to be added except as expansion packs that you have to pay for.

And yes, Guild Wars is a beautiful game. Wish I had more time to devote to it.

Re: Cost of COV

I think they should make both games fee 20-25 bucks a month. Its totally fair. And, is Guild Wars free to play? I thought there was a monthly fee or something too. Seems like the choice for a second MMO for me.

Yeah Guild Wars is free to play and yes they will still have free updates like in CoH (they probably wouldnt be as large as CoH but they promise free updates). The one thing with Guild Wars is that every so often they will release an expansion pack that you must buy to get the major new content. But last I heard was that the 1st expansion to cost you money wouldnt occur to sometime next year. So for now its all free and such.

Re: Cost of COV

It was my understanding after reading through everything that COV and COH where to be together as there where 7 new areas for both heroes and villains adn 4 pvp areas. You could play either version and be limited or have both installed and play them as an expanded game.

Those of us who want to stay heroes don't have to get anything to interact with the CoV players do we? Wouldn't all the CoV stuff come with the CoV game? I know it looks awesome but if there's fees then I'm not going with it. I still gotta get to 50 so I can get Kheldified!

I wonder how the game timecards are going to work, cuz that's what I use (no credit, can't get credit card, cursing credit gods, craving sandwich).

I think it would be unfair if they made only timecards that worked on both that costs more, but some people buying them only want to play one or the other...

Re: Cost of COV

how about 2 time card options for diffrent costs? 1 time card for an individual game and a seperate time card for both. seems like the easiest soulution to me.

Re: Cost of COV

I wouldn't gamble on NCSoft giving away free CoV time to CoH subscribers. They'd lose a ton of money if they did. Their most logical move would be charging the same 15 per month for CoV, and the 15 bucks for CoH. That's what they'd do if they knew their business. People will pay it even if they don't like it. Like now, I'm not huge on the 15 per month for CoH, but I love the game, so I pay up every 30 days.

However, I'd hope that they give a discount for dual subscribers. It'd show good will to their customers. My advice is to expect to pay full price for both, that way if they make it a reduced price (or *gasp* free), you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Re: Cost of COV

Ya I'm guessing Dual Subscription to be around $18-$20, but NCsoft has been talking about a universal subscription for all of its games just like SOE has, which probably is going to be more around $25. That just shows it definately will be lower than that though.

QUOTE
On the issue of a hypothetical fee increase to keep both standalone games active concurrently:

QUOTE
- Gaffer mentioned no more than $3-5/month back in November of '04.

- bruce mentioned \"somewhere between 'zero' and 'not much'\" in May '05.

- Gaffer , Lord_Recluse , and Statesman have stated clearly and definitively that the company WILL NOT be doubling the fee.

How many times is that shrill air horn of a comment of 'I'm not paying $30 a month' gonna go off, lol? Of course you're not - IT WAS NEVER AN OPTION.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You're exactly right! {Statesman 5/24/05}

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Furthermore, the company's internal discussion of raising the monthly by a buck or two is to fund the development of Issues for each game as regularly as they have for just CoH. The hypothetical minor raising of the fee to play CoH+CoV has little to do with additional server/bandwidth costs, and little to do with PvP, so people who think that PvP is ruining everything should avoid that blame card.

For those of you playing the home version of this gameshow, here's the math for current CoH subscribers!
pay $40-$50 for CoV - less if you wait 6 months
the regular content updates may DOUBLE
CoH+CoV subscribers pay $0-$5 extra/month for up to DOUBLE the added content
cue complaints from casual players that they can't keep with all the new stuff.
Now then, if Cryptic goes with blended content updates that are not any larger than the ones we have now at the pace we have now, the problem isn't that they need more money - they need to trim some payroll. If the updates expand as my tea leaves indicate, an added $0-$5/month is worth the money and the problem becomes, \"How will I find time to burn through doubled content updates?\"

The official US City of Villains site's FAQ states, “Pricing will be announced when pre-order boxes are available at retail stores later this year.” That'll happen October-ish in the US. Cue teeth-gnashing much to the delight of dentists everywhere... Can we get to the good stuff now?

Well if they will announce pricing later on why did they make it so you can pre order now? Im sorry but I refuse to pay 50 bucks for a game, and then have to wait and find out the monthly price.

I am new to this site and i have a question for you all, i do not own city of heroes and have never played it, but i just reserved city of villains... I heard that the $15/month will be for the subscription for both COH and COV when it comes out. I was wondering, does anyone know if the same rules will apply for me (the newbie to the game) who does not own and will not own city of heroes before city of villains? Because i will want to play COH as well as COV but from the way it sounds, i will only be able to play COV and not be able to start up a COH character as well. Should i instead start up a COH character right now so that i will have all the options available or do the options go both ways. (because right now it sounds like the only benefits will go to the current COH players).
Please answer me if you can understand this at all :) THX

First off, welcome to the site, glad you could join us!

Now as far as CoV goes, it is a stand-alone game that interacts with CoH in designated locations. So if you buy JUST CoV, you will only get CoV content. That is what the person earlier was talking about when he said double the content, for $0-$5. Secondly, the cost of having the two together (or even CoV alone), HAS NOT been disclosed. No official source has said a word about the cost of CoV, so anything you read until you do is purely hypothetical. If you want to get an idea of the monthly cost of CoH, go here.

As far as whether you should buy City of Heroes or not, I would recommend it, especially if you want to make heroes too. It will give you something to do until City of Villains comes out. As of now, the projected release date is October 31. I have my doubts as to whether they can make that time frame, but that is the official word as of the moment. When we know more, you'll know more.

OK thanks. I think i probably will at least get city of heroes till villains comes out. And i have one more question... is there any advantage to getting the boxed version of city of heroes rather than just downloading it off the internet? because currently i have the downladed version of the game. Thanks for the help!

The only advantage I know of is in the DVD edition of the game, you get the Prestige Power Slide, which is just a nifty looking Sprint. (It's exactly the same as sprint, but you slide along the ground with a glowie thing under you) You also get an additional cape that's only available in the DVD edition, but I don't much care for the looks of the cape.

I'm not entirely certain how that works. You probably DO have to pay for a retail CDKey. Which you can probably get cheapest at like Walmart or something. A lot of places are selling the box for about 20 bucks.

Ok thanks. My brother told me that you can only play the game if you have the real box version though, right now im using the bootleg version with the free 14 day trial, I'm not going to be forced to buy the box am I?  Once again thx for all the help!

Thats how i got started with CoH. nope. you don't need to buy the box. or a cd-key. If you pay the monthly fee, you can continue playing.

Who else besides me getting the Collector's Editiion? I wasn't going to get it at first, but then I figured this is really the only game I play, why the heck not. . .
