Spines?

Ill start playing this game in a few days (when my computer gets fixed, URGH) and i was thinking of playing as a scrapper.
I like the sound of spines, they look coll and seem fun to play, but ive heared from a few people that spines can get boring quickly, is there any truth to this?
Also, im intrigued by claws but i cant find out much about them, any poinions here?
A final thing, im not sure about a secondary powerset, im stuck between regen/SR, so any opinions would be appreciated...

PS. first post so hi all!

Re: Spines?

I haven't built a high spine or claws character yet, but from what I've heard, Spines is the superior in damage as well as keeping aggro. That's kinda why people get bored is because mobs are dead before they're a problem.

Claws are cool, but they have endurance problems as they cycle so fast you run out in no time. Most people rank this second-best attack.

Now secondary I'm a little more familiar with.

Regen is supposed to be the uber defense, if you can get high enough to actually put it to use. Unfortunately, in the beginning, you have no defense against attacks and can fall very quickly. Later though, it will save your butt.

SR is great for the reason that it keeps you from getting hit and is helpful from the very beginning. Unfortunately, when you do get hit, it hurts. Also, all the toggles are a major endurance hog that can quickly leave you defenseless in a fight if you don't pace yourself.

Re: Spines?

My Spine regen is only L9 so my experience is limited. My dark/SR is 50 and it worked it well. The nice thing IMHO about SR is if you don't get hit you also avoid the secondary effect. What I mean is if a cold based attack misses the slow effect of it wont affect you. If you have a regen or an invuln you get little damage but you get the slow effect. So far I like the spine, but I play him mostly when I dont have time for longer missions with my higher heroes.

Re: Spines?

I have a level 24 spines/regen character, and he rocks! It really doesn't take that long for regen to become good, and it becomes fantastic at 16 when you get integration. Spines is fun! And yes it does a ton of damage (toxic damage even), and that is half the fun!

And welcome to the site, by the way!

Re: Spines?

I have one hero with spines, great fun but some of the spine powers I find to be a bit slow. Keep some endur. inspirations handy.

Re: Spines?

Regen also gives you an endurance recovery power like stamina.

SR toggles can kill ya early on...till you get high enough to be able to appreciate em.

I really didn't like claws...the animation for slash and swipe take too long.

I don't think barab swipe is any better but I never had any problems up to around 20 or so. I have neglected that scrapper for a bit though...i'm an altaholic.

Spines gives you something rare for melee sets....a ranged attack with good dmg that immobilzes fairly often.

Spine throw is hands down the best power I got in spines :P.

Re: Spines?

I have to agree that regen seems to work well with spines. I did enjoy my SR but it was with dark melee which had debuffs on the enemies, making me even harder to hit and it had an end drain that added to my end which helped. Like I said my regen isnt far, and some people complain SR is too end draining, and you have to switch toggles. I really didnt mind the switching but it could have been the dark melee helping.

Anyway you could make 2 and try them out or try one and if you don't like it then try the other. You have slots per server and 1..2.3.. umm a bunch of servers so have fun. And FYI L1-10 go fast so if you make one and dont like it, dont be afraid to start again.

Re: Spines?

Spines also has more AoE than other scrapper sets.

Re: Spines?

My own question now.

Is the End Recover power in Regen as good as Stamina or do you still want to pick that one up to fill the gap. Maybe have a 3 slotted End Recover and a 6 slotted Stamina? Asking cuz I'm getting my regen scrapper up there and wondering if I should go Fitness or not.

Re: Spines?

I actually play a claws/invuln scrapper. She is by far my favorite out of all the alts I have made. Claws can be a big endurance drain though, I always have to go in with tons of endurance inspirations. You guys made spines sound so cool, I'm actually gonna log on right after this and make a spine critter.

I have noticed though that people tend to overlook invuln. I love it. I rarely need healing, as long as I'm not in a huge group alone, Unyielding Stance gives you resistance to EVERY attack, except psionic. That has been very handy. The only secondary effect that I get hit with is slow. Knockback, disorient, sleep, and all the rest don't affect me with Stance toggled on.

Re: Spines?

ok, for various reasons i still havent been able to get on (around a month has passed since i made this topic >.<), and ive been thinking, im interested in claws and dark armour, but the big potential drawback is that i may have BIG endurance issues, am i right in thinking this?

Re: Spines?

At lower levels (below 20-ish) almost all builds have endurance issues. You will have to sacrificies some of your slots to endurance reducers, and you will be ok then. Every build combination is playable. It is just up to you how you want to play your hero. Just go for claw/Da and see how it goes. I think most of us, when we started created 3 or 4 different heroes. The first sucked. The second is still around. But the third or fourth one has become the main, and that one we try to get to 50 (eventually).

Re: Spines?

Can't tell you much about the claws but DA will drain your end real fast if you are not careful. Be sure to slot some end redux in your shields if you use DA for your secondary. Also DA has good resistance to end drain with the Murky Shield and gets Psi and mez resistance with Obsidian Shield which help a lot in the later parts of the game.

Re: Spines?

As a Lvl 50 Spine Scrapper....I can easily say that they rock. I solo'ed a majority of the time at or above my lvl and was able to hang in there. Honestly though, it's not the toon that matters, it's the player. I've seen all kinds of Lvl 50's and except for the one's that PL'ed themselves I'm sure they would all say how awesome that power set is that they picked.

Re: Spines?

My Spines/Regen is level 23, and I cannot believe someone would say they become boring. I am having a blast with him. I love the AoE attacks, although I get myself into trouble on a regular basis by trying to herd as many MOBs as I can to take advantage of those. Regen is a great secondary also, especially for the endurance-recovery you get early on.

Someone asked earlier if Quick Recovery was enough to forego thr fitness pool's Stamina. I would say yes, but only up to a certain point. I plan on running alot of toggles: Integration, Quills, Combat Jumping, Tough. Right now, at level 23, with Quick Recovery 5-slotted with DO's and no Stamina, I am routinely running CJ, Quills, & Integration, (& Sprint if I forgot to shut it off) and am not running into too many enduarnce issues unless the fight starts taking too long. This has really only happened against groups of Tsoo with a Sorcerer. If the whirlwind goes up and I keep whiffing, then the endurance problems start.
