| Overly used and Abused power. |
|
|
|
some thing i have notice is that there are three powers that are so overly used and/or abused. The first one is Hasten, I have meet more people that have told me to get Hasten and then my blaster wouldn't suck (well News cap, Fire blasters don't need it cause all of their atk have insane Rech time). The second most overly used and/or abused power is the blaster secondary power set Devices, now i know it nice when you can blow trough guy easly but where is the fun of the challenge (Plus you dont get build up which is a really helpfull power). The thrid most overly used and/or abused power is Stamina, and sadly too say it that i have it and i am very dependent on it. I would have a lot harder time if i didn't have it. But it is still a power that almost every Hero has.
Know if anyone has any other power they think is overly used and/or abused, plz post in a kind non-offending manner.

I cannot comment on the Devices as a blaster secondary, but I will certainly agree with your assessment of Hasten and Stamina. It has become almost second nature to get Hasten as your L6 or L8 power, and work your way up to Stamina from L16-20. The latter, in particular, can make those levels somewhat boring and anti-climactic when choosing your new power (Yes!!! I get to choose Health! Yay!)
I have found Hasten to be very beneficial with a number of my characters, though I do try and see if I can live without it. With regard to Stamina, I recall that even Statesman himself commented that they underestimated the number of builds that would become dependant upon it.

I got my tanker up to lvl 32 before I even considered getting hasten. And I did just fine. Now that I have it I am also happy. I don't know who you wined and screamed to you, but I never heard anybody cry about it to me one way or the other. I think there are no wrong builds. If you are happy with your hero, it is the perfect build.

I have tried to write this in a non-offending manner, but plz i understand you may not think that a power is neccesary (like i said, \"i am very depend on it (Stamina)\") but it doesn't mean that it is not a overly used and/or abused power, but that does not give anyone that right to scream like a 2 year old cause you disagree with a posting.

So first off, I am curious to know if you have received offending comments here at Gameamp, or if you are used to getting them elsewhere (like the main forums at CoH). We do not allow flaming or griefing here, and we swat it aside with righteous fury when we see it! Occasionally we refer back to a certain thread to make sure everyone knows the rules here. If you have any problems with that, feel free to PM myself or any other staff member with your concerns. That being said...
I only have one character with devices. I dig it, but I hate being repetative. I see plenty of it, but not so much that I would say it's totally abused. I WILL say however, that we wouldn't have so many blasters taking it if the other secondaries in the blaster AT were brought up to strength with it.
Hasten is another of those that I don't have alot of, also due to repetition. I see a TON of people with Hasten, and they all seem shocked when I tell them I have no plans to get it. One of the first things I think of is, "do I need it?" And then I ask, "does my character look the way he should with his hands all glowy?" I only have one or two characters with Hasten, and I am an altalholic!
Fitness? GUILTY! Can't be helped... I am one of those people who think that this category should be automatically infused into your character at certain levels. Statesman says that no power is absolutely NEEDED, but this is as close as it comes, and it is ridiculous to try and run at high levels without it.
And my own personally abused power? HURRICANE! I make even the toughest missions easy with my storm/dark defender. Blow them into a corner with gust of wind, keep them there with Hurricane, attack at will! Not only does the Hurricane use knockback so that enemies can't attack, but it also has an accuracy debuff (along with all my dark powers) so that the few times they do attack they miss! I am completely guilty of Hurricane abuse... and proud of it.

Srry Nakomo i have not, and i did not mean to imply that.
Now i was told by a scrapper (in game) once that if i didn't have Hasten i wasn't a true Hero (Paraphing there). He was saying that you had to have it so that you can use your power to the Max and so forth. thats why i bring this topic up because, i want to know other people input about this.
Oh and as i said, I must have stamina cause i burn end with my atk because they 1) recharge fast 2) blaze has a big end cost. But i didn't get it till lvl 24 (after Respec Tf completion), and I found it SO helpful. So i am guilty.

Okay...Repetitive - Definitely. I completely agree that it sucks to make numerous characters with the same powers. Sadly, I also feel that the heroes that I've created benefit from the 2 powers that you dislike. My main is an Illusion/Radiation Emission Controller, and my secondary is an Earth/Storm Controller. Before I did research into the game, neither had Hasten or Stamina. Honestly, my main had Hasten (simply to make Super Speed available), but I didn't know how to make it perma, so I thought it was useless. After reading numerous posts that gave a thorough background of each, I decided to respec Brightside on test to see how Hasten and Stamina would affect my playing style. It made a world of difference. I feel like Bright was significantly improved since that respec, and I often recommend to other players that they should try the change on test. In summary, I wish I could keep my heroes from having repetitive powers, but my favorite type of characters actually need Hasten and Stamina to become powerhouses.

I have hasten and stamina on my main guy so I am guilty on the use and abuse of them. I love the combo because it lets me make the speed killer that I wanted my main to be but I am trying now on my alts to build them up without those powers.

For the most part, if I make a scrapper, I'll make him have hasten. I play blasters in more of a "kill them all in one or 2 shots" sort of way, so hasten isn't all that necessary to me for them. Build Up + Aim + AOE usually takes down what I need to take down.
I think stamina is totally necessary for almost every AT, except possibly tanks, but even then it's pretty handy.

I have a level 40 Tanker with Stamina 3 slotted. Absolutely need it. I finally made it to the big boy island and I need my 4 toggles (Temp Invul, Unyielding, Invincible, and Acrobatics) on to do so... well, to play with the level 42 bosses at least.
I had a Assalt Rifle/Devices Blaster named Jim Rome a while back that made it to level 12 without Hasten, but I ended up dumping him because A) I hate being so darn squishy and B) I died too much. But I'm thinking about making another Blaster.
I got a question though, is it fair to call Stamina overly used when it is so badly needed? Wouldn't it be a necessity?

Humph,
Must have been the same person that complained to me that Whimcycle was not very heroic for using pets and invise during fights. Well, if you are happy with the way you are progressing, then ignore the ignorant and press on, have fun.
If you feel they have a valid point, which you apparently don't, then review your character with respect to other powers. I myself never thought about using the Fittness power set until I started reading about it here. I now get it on my controllers the twentys level section, where they don't get decent spells. Why? Because a controller without Stamina and Health is usually a dead controller, if they solo alot, and I do.
Now, do I have Hasten and Stamina on my Blaster? No. Should I? Haven't really seen the need, as he is a hit and run artist. That is why he has super speed. See, Hervis would not be much of a hero to this this person, either.
And as others have noted, we don't Flame On this board. Have to catch the Fantastic Four website for that. {Never said we didn't do bad puns or lame jokes. There you gots to take your chances. Grin!}

I think that's the point of the thread. The original poster is basically saying that Stamina is so necessary that it should almost be considered an inherant power, like Rest or Sprint.

Superspeed. They should take out the stealth element entirely, or make SS auto-off after 4 seconds of inactivity. I admit though, that I abuse this power.
Personal Power Abuse: Rise of the Phoenix! I took it as my level 49 Flame Mastery power, and now I purposely draw aggro in the middle of HUUUGE spawns just to see it! But, then again, I am a bit of a show-off.

You can play a toon ANY way you like to. A good number of my toons have the fitness pool.
My main uses swift, health, and stamina from the fitness pool. Health and Stamina in PARTICULAR have been extremely helpfull to me. Both are six slotted and enable me to get back into a fight VERY quickly. Before stamina my down times between fights was considerable. I never felt the need to get hasten on my blaster. The only powers that I really need to get back up quickly are build up and aim, both of which as I have them slotted now, recharge in about 30 seconds. The only other power that I wouldn't mind recharging faster is inferno. If I could get that built up to charge in about a minute I'ld be a happy camper.
My scrapper, for instance, has it because he's a "natural" toon. I mean he has NO travel powers whatsoever, so I use hurdle and swift to make travel bareble in game. I definaly will be taking stamina as well, because it's just to friggin hard to do anything with two enduro sucking toggles on.
My defender has stamina as well...even with RA six slotted with SO's there's still some down time where having stamina enables me to keep my team on their feet.
In fact, there are far to many toons that I use that find keeping their enduro up to be a heck of a problem that stamina solves.
In regards to hasten, I really haven't used it that much. In fact, only ONE of my toons has hasten, my super speedster scrapper. My speedster tanker doesn't (sorry, what tank needs to be cranking out attacks?) Maybe my fire blaster just recharges much faster then the other blaster power sets. I know the Ice blaster that I rolled for the veggies does have a little bit of down time between attacks.
Personally, if the devs view this as a problem, I'ld suggest that making attacks have a shorter recharge time as you progress with them, and a lower enduro cost the longer you use them, would make a lot of sense. Outright nerfing any of those powers would make a LOT of VERY unhappy individuals.
Actually, thinking about it, I think the best way to approach any future power adjustments isn't to "nerf" a power set, but bump up the other power sets accordingly. If someone thinks that SR scrappers are to agile in PvP, then perhaps bumping up accuracy on attacks would be a better approach then dropping down defense on SR's.
Unless it's fire tanks....

I can't really say I've seen an overly used power or abused power as each power seems to be more or less effective dependent on whether you solo or team more. The need for Stamina wouldn't be so NEEDED if they would tweak the end. cost of powers as you leveled higher and higher. There shouldn't be any specific power that is considered a neccessity as the whole game concept is based on the player's choice of powers and how he/she wants to play the game. For instance, hasten is very helpful for people if attacking over and over is needed. But keep in mind, a blater who makes a large amounts of attacks is bound to draw an increasing number of aggro therefore calling for more healing. So would hasten actually be less useful fro someone who solos as compared to a power like hover with extra defense or super speed to get in and out fast without being shot up.
As far as people blasting you for not having certain powers, I just remind them that my playing technique is different than theirs so I might want another power instead of that power.
Anyways, I've rambled on and on enough once again. Just one man's humble opinion.

Dougnukem and Blue-Flag, I understand your guys point of view. i was thinking on getthing Hasten for my Scrapper. For my healer i was think Stamina and Fly. And for my tank i waz thinking SJ. So i can't say i that i don't use the powers. So i not saying that it wrong to have those powers, it just that i see those power on almost everyone.
Srry if i made it sound like something else then what i meant.
Oh and on the adjusting powers part of your post's. Why not up the blasters damage so that it higher then Scrappers. The reason why is that scrappers do more damage then blasters and they have defense to. While Blaster do damage with no defense. and scrappers almost have the same ToHit chance. Cause many of time i have thought to scrap my blaster and just go as a scrapper. But then i do enjoy a challenge.

No, not at all.
Some people build toons to make an all out, no holds barred, kick your teeth in toon, which is bound to get nerfed because it's just TOO good. Like the whole /dev blaster fiasco that just GUTTED blasters turning them into shells of their former selves.
I build my toons as I think the toon themselves should be built for their concept.
Case in point, I made a dark/regen/super speed scrapper which I love. BUT I'm not taking ANYTHING but shadow puch, shadow maul, and smite because it doesn't fit the concept for that toon.
Likewise I created a "natural" Samuri toon who has NO travel powers outside of the ones offered in the fitness pool. Real pain in the bum getting from point A to point B untill I got some SO's in his slots.
However let's look at why these power sets are so tasty.
The fitness pool, in general, is one of the best power pool sets around. I grab swift on almost ALL my toons at lvl 6. Simply because at lvl 6 it's a VERY nice power to help you get from point A to point B, it also stacks with other travel powers. Hurdle helps if you're deciding to go the super speed route, and gives you a little extra vertical boost which comes in quite handy (honestly, with just one SO Jump boost in hurdle most maps are a breeze to get through...with the exception of the Faultline, which I deem untravelable unless you have TP or fly). Health and Stamina both give you a VERY short down time between battles. My blaster is a killing machine who rarely needs to worry about taking a break between battles. Even after using inferno, I can be back up and in the action in about 30 seconds. Top to bottom, the Fitness Pool is a winner.
The super speed pool is another pool that is just a win/win pool. Hasten is a winner of a power (far more then flurry is). You can use it from level 6 on up. Hasten gives you the pre-requisite for super speed, which is probibly THE best travel power in the game. Not only is it the fastest, but it is also is the ONLY travel power I'm aware of with a built in benifit. Up to I4, super jump and TP were neutral (no status benifits or losses), and fly was actually DETRIMENTAL to toons if you were fighting with it on (negative accuracy which has since been removed). So, you can easily get a GOOD power right away, and then get another good power...there's no waste.
On the other hand, I think a LOT more toons would have the fighting pool IF THERE WASN'T SO MUCH WASTE TO IT. Both boxing and kick are HORRIBLE attacks with very little benefit. The real benefits to the fighting pool, namely tough and weave, which can make a blaster's life much easier, require you to take a power that is virtually worthless. I took boxing, and removed it from my trays because I have absolutly NO need for an attack that does as little damage as it does.
Do ANY builds need any of the power pools to make them "playable"? No. If you know what you're doing every build is extremely playable. Some builds are far more solable then others. The toon that levels the fastest in my stable of heros is my Emp healer. She never gets debt, and she is ALWAYS in demand to run missions from toons 2-5 levels higher then she is. She can't solo at ALL, but she doesn't need to. I know I have less then 20 hours on her and she's allready a lvl 25 character.
However, I do understand why so many builds may chose the combinations that seem to be so prevelant, because it's just too attractive TO take those pools given the benifits you recieve.

Ok about Hasten, I think it's great but definately not required for my fire/fire blaster. But with Stamina there is no eaqual and no reason not to take the entire pool! I mean for a healer it's vital because while you're sitting their waiting for end recovery you're team is getting closer and closer to death. And as a blaster I couldn't stand not having stamina because 1) It allows me to save slots on end reduction 2) I never have to stop and 3) I would never be able to survive using inferno on solo without it. With inferno I can kill most of the group one shot and stamin gets me that ity bity chunk of end I need to fire off consume and get my full bar back! So needless to say I think stamina should be inherant at lvl 20 and hasten is a bit over rated but not a bad power it all.

I know many a player who would be dead if it wasn't for 'haste' on my Dark/Rad defender. Twilight Grasp has such a SLOW recharge that Haste is mandatory for heals.
(at least - in the heat of battle it's slow)
The same applies for my EMP/Rad def. I HAVE to have haste, or I can't heal damage fast enough to keep the team alive.
I find myself one teams fighting purples - all the time, and they can dish out serious damage.
As far as Stamina is concerned - IF it was an automatic gain, it would make my Recovery Aura a useless power.
Sorry, but I just wouldn't like that at all. RA makes my absolutely NO damage dealing Emp def a godsend to ANY team.

I currently only have 2 heroes with haste, both scrappers and both the same build (DM/AR). I found that with DM having a limited number of "attacks" I felt it was needed and did not clash with my charector concept (DM has a few drain type powers that arent effective as "attacks" as much as buff/debuffs). Even my dark and emp def dont have it so far.I dont think that wil change for the dark. If i get it for my emp it will not be perma it will be a "panic power" fits him better (well my concept of him)
most of my heroes that are high enough have stamina. I feel it is needed for most types. Enven Statesman seems to admit this is the case. I have one hero that i havent started on that path (and he is 17) to see if he can make it but it looks like he will end up with it too.
I have only one blaster and he has Dev, but he is an AR/Dev cause i thought it was a "cool" set and he is "military" based, so it fit.
As for abused powers I dont really think I have any, unless you count stamina, but wiith States saying it's pretty much needed I dont call it abused.

Okay i made a Kinitic defender and i didn't like the Rech on the Siphon Power, and i waz wanting to go for SS. So i grabed Hasten and it helps get it off atleast 2-3 buff of Siphon Power , so i cant say it a bad power but helpful when you need it. So i can't say i haven't used it. But am i gona make it a Perma, NO. I will just get the rech to a resonable time of a like a minute after it wheres off.
So yeah i know i started the post about this but hey got use what handy.

Power is only a tool. How you use it determines everything.
If you use it to help and protect others then you will be great in the eyes of others, and be called a Hero.
But if you use your power the opposite of that, you will be feared by the the same eyes, and be called a Villian.
This opition I give to you. Choose wisely.

Alright here is my take on this. YES I think fitness is way too needed and it's almost forcing you to grab the pool power....I believe you should choose pool power according to your archtype and thier shouldn't be any NEEDED pool power set for all hero.
HOWEVER I see haste as optional. You can do without it and use those 5 extra slots to further enhance your powers. Granted its very useful...again perhaps too useful...but you can easily do wiithout it...unlike stamina.
Blasters DO have an option to dodge stamina. Instead of devices take energy secondary and you can get conserve power. It makes your skills cost SO MUCH LESS END while its up and it can be recharge enhanced to be perma. OF course many combine this with stamina as well.
The energy secondary also has some decent melee and good knockback for if you get a bad guy on you. Also you get power boost which greatly enhances secondary effects such as knockback while it's up. Stun which when used with power boost can leave an enemy helpless for a good long time. Total focus which is even better than stun i think on that one. You also have a range increasing power...limited usefulness but it CAN come in handy sometimes.
IT might be noted that the holds in the ice blaster line could be boosted by the power boost :P.
But again focusing on stamina here is my thoughts/thread I made on it.
Stamina
No Stamina does not eliminate the usefulness of RA. Yous till have an endurance limit...it's just higher than normal. With RA my controller for one can go crazy and spam EVERY power he has without fear of losing endurance. I'm sure blasters feel the same.

I'm surprised that anyone pays so much attention to powers used by others that they can call any of them 'overly used' or 'abused'. Even so, as much as I respect the first poster's right to the opinion, it's silly to say anything like 'almost every hero has stamina'.
I have at least 20 characters, and not one of them has stamina. Maybe it's because my choices have been limited thus far (none of my 'guys' are over level 22). Perhaps when I have few good things to choose from, stamina will find its way into some of their power sets.
And, only a couple of my scrappers have hasten.
For me and my guys, I might have a tendency to abuse TP Foe. It's not that I like it all that much, its just that controllers are pretty nerfed, and I do more solo than team stuff; so, some of my characters do get dependent on it.
That's my biggest complaint. My nerfed gravity controller cannot finish a timed mission because, to keep fighting, I TP (cuts down on healing and regen time, but adds to endurance cost and just plain time due to failed TPs). Takes forever just to finish a white.

1st of welcome to the site drachen!
also i have hasten on one of my characters (and no it is not my main)... i never saw the point of wasting an entire power pool b/c i wanted one power from it... also w/ my blaster i always have at least one attack ready for use... it may not be my strongest attack, but i don't really have any kind of down time w/ all my powers so i never saw why so many people want those glowie fists
but stam... oh the joy of stam and health 6 slotted... it makes it possible for Liz to be the bad ass that she is... b/f stam i had a LOT of down time waiting on end to recharge... now it seems that unless i'm fighting an av my stam never even gets half way down and the health really helps keep my squishy butt alive

I agree that Hasten, Stamina, and Devices are all widly used
I dont think that should make them any less desireable. If a skill compliments your set/concept then grab it.
Hasten is a very usefull power for some builds and opens up SS at 14.
Devices fits real well with most Assualt rifle Blaster concept characters and to be honest the other secondaries in the blaster set are primaliy melee skills.
Stamina, wouldnt leave home without it.The fitness pool is the most popular for obvious reasons. (I actualy have a tank with Swift 6 slotted and no other travel powers)
/ranting on ( not directed at anyone, just a generalization)
Now what about the dreaded FoTM (flavor of the month) label? I find it funny that alot of players choose other power combos solely to NOT be a cookiecutter hero (ie. Ill/Rad controller, x/Devices Blaster, Fire/Fire Tank, etc.) and look down on others based on their build being 'cookiecutter'. IF someone wants to choose a FoTM hero with 6 slotted hasten, stamina, etc., Fine. If someone wants to play an Earth/FF contoller without certain sloting or skills, thats cool too. This is why people create 'character build guides'. I mean really, are you NOT gonna make an Archer just because everyone else has rolled one?
Sorry to go off on a side tangent. Its just a pet peeve of mine. I seem to be drawn to theese cookiecuter sets and am tired of being targeted by the rightous Mr. Earth/FF. There are only so many powersets to choose from here and If me playing a cookiecutter or having certain skills makes me less heroic then I say pfft , Dare I say not being cookiecutter IS the FoTM. =)

I agree with Transmission on this one. Play what you want, and play how you want. It doesn't matter if you've got a "cookie cutter" character if you enjoy your time in Paragon. As many have said in numerous threads, it's your $15 per month. Use it however you'd like.

I agree...play whatever you want. From a personal standpoint, though, I enjoy seeing "non-traditional" power match-ups. It is refreshing and can make the game more fun because you cannot just assume a certain hero will behave in the way that you have become accustomed. You actually have to pay attention and strategize so everyone is on the same page.

Yeah, sometimes it's more fun to pick the power you've never seen anyone else use, just to get to see it. Nobody likes Teleport Foe, but it's lots of fun to toss enemies off of tall buildings.
