Respec...I'm confused!

I was reading today about respec. I read that CoH will let every one have one free respec, then I read on the CoH website that you have to do the Task Force and that is the only way. Did CoH give everyone a free respec, or was that just for the testers?

We got a free respec over X-mas, and one in May with the 1 year anniversary. But you can always get a respec by doing the Terra-Volta task forces. There is one for lvls 24-33, 34-43 and 44-50. I don;t know where the 34 and 44 TF are started, but the 24 TF is in Independence Port. Just hang out there for a few minutes, and you will hear plenty of people looking for respec teams.

I believe the 34 Respec TF is given in Founders Falls while the 44 Respec TF is given in Rikti Crash Site

Speaking of which, how long does it usually take to do the L24 Terra Volta respec trial? I've never done it and I'd like to do it with Shyvver before he gets too high. He's L28 now.

Yeah, two hours tops. Supposedly it is not as hard anymore as it used to be. One opening door mission, bit of running around in IP, and then to the reactor core.

Of course it takes much longer if your team has a hero with superspeed, and nobody with TP. It took me 20 minutes and many curses to get to the reactor.

The first Respec Task Force is Sky Raiders, first is a hunt mission in Terra Volta, then its an indoor mission and after that it's to the Terra Volta reactor core. I know this one well because my whole team bailed on me once we got to the reactor core. I was the only one able to to hit the baddies in there and ended up failing it... boo hoo for me.

Second Respec Task Force is Freakshow, and mission one is an indoor mission, but then I get hazy and only remember going to the reactor then with more Freakshow. I don't know if there was a second mission.

The Respec Task Forces seem to be only 2-3 missions long. I need to do one for my character.

Oh good. Raiders go down FAST with Ice. I don't know if they're vulnerable to it, but they're not resistant anyway. :)

Well my main character was created in May, so where do I go to attain my free respec? Another Questoin about Respec: I know you cannot change your Primary and Secondary power sets, but what about the power pools, say you made a mistake, can you go back and change those when you respec?

Actually I thought the free respec was from when I4 came out, not from the anniversary, but either way, when you first log onto your character, it should say something in the global chat box about having 1 free respec remaining. To access it, all you need to do is type /respec in the chat box from any location. This only works on the free respecs, I'm told, for the TF ones, you have to goto some guy, somewhere (too lazy or I'd look it up) Anyway, once you type that, it'll take you to the respec screen.
As to your second question, yes! If you wish, you can change all of your pool powers out, go from fly to superspeed, anything.

To get the free respec (which was given out for the anniversary) you had to log in on the 29th of April. It was a 1 day deal. All other respecs must be earned via the trials.

From what I gathered, it was given to all characters that existed before that date. So as long as your character was made before 4/29, you got it.

Indeed the only way to get the Free Respec was to be around when they handed it out, otherwise your poop out of luck. Besides the TFs are fun to do, if you have the time to do them.

Respec is not built to be HUGE, but it is built to be HARD. That said, time it takes depends on

If you're team is experienced with this Trial
Team size (bigger teams are NOT better or easier. You'll spawn more mobs of the Lt. and Boss flavor)
Team composition—and REALLY think about this: How will you manage aggro? You can't buy inspirations once you begin, so how will you heal or rez? Do you have damage mitigation? Do you have effective damage dealers? You don't need a tanker (just did one last night without much else besides squishies), or any specific AT/build for that matter. But you need to answer the above questions.
Team level—make sure all your characters fall within one or two levels of each other, or that you have enough sidekick or exemp slots. The highest level mob will spawn +2 to the highest level unexemped or unsidekicked hero.
Tactics—if you can't form or follow a simple plan, don't try this trial. Your problems are deeper than a gimped hero :)

That's all the non-mission-specific advice I have.

The free respects are given to all characters. There was one issued around Christmas for I3, one around the time of I4, and I believe you'll get one when I5 hits too. The devs do this because they're changing power sets, some changes MAY change a set so much that you may want to reevalutate how you have your powers set up. You can only have ONE "free" respec at a time. That means if you don't use up a "free" respec when they issue a new one, you'll lose the old one, and get the "new" one. They do not stack, you cannot have more then one "free" respec.

However if you do the respec Task Forces, you CAN get more then one respec. If you do the lvl 24 respec TF, and the lvl 34 respec TF, and the lvl 44 respec TF, and NEVER use the respec, you can have 3 respecs on your character. (Four if you don't use the free respec)

I am unaware if you can do a respec TF twice to get a respec. Never tried it. I know you cant, say, build up respecs by just doing the TF over and over. Like do the Lvl 24 TF twice and then have 2 respecs. However I don't know if after using a respec, you can do the TF again and get the respec back.

You have a lifetime maximum of three respecs made aavailable via the TF method. These invisible respec "slots" let's call them, become available at level 24, 34, and 44. It doesn't matter which TF you do (Skyraider, Freakshow, or Rikti) to earn a respec. So, you can do the Skyraider TF at levels 24, 34, and 44 if you choose. But once you've earned three, that's it. You can't go do a different respec TF and get another. Also, if you do the Skyraider TF five times between levels 24 and 33, you'll only earn ONE respec, since you only have the one "slot" from level 24.

What's unclear to me, is if the new auto-exemp feature on test will apply to these TFs. I can only assume that they will.

good point mr el, before i got to your post i was going to say, i found out the hard way you only get 3 chances to use a respec. once youve done 3 of them, thats it until they give out the free ones, which i really needed on my main and am still not satisfied with lol. have to wait for the next free one to "wash, rinse, and repeat"

I wouldn't count on getting one when I5 hits. They gave one with I3 because of HUGE changes with power sets.

They gave one with I4 because of HUGE nerfs to power sets (the travel power accuracy thing, the MoG and Elude thing, various other things).

I5 doesn't seem to have a lot of existing power changes. It's more in the Adding Sets and Adding a Zone. (I really wish they would make Regen a tanker primary!!!) So I wouldn't expect a free respec with Issue 5. Perhaps another around Christmas as a "gift" but I doubt you'll see one soon.

Weren't they aiming to nerf Tankers and Scrappers? That could warrant a need for a free Respec. Also wasn't it mentioned that if there was a big enough call for it, they would hand out the Free Respec if I5 messed with people's powers that much? Of course that is IF.

I don't think there was any plan to nerf tankers and scrappers. I think it's more of a plan to give Blasters and Controllers a little love.

I thought it was if you can solo an AV, then they plan to nerf you. Apparently certain Tanks, Scrappers and Controllers are able to do so. I wish I could!

I hope they don't nerf Tanks, I have a hard time taking on a group of lieus 2 levels higher then me as it.

Aside from possibly fire tanks, most tanks are pretty well balanced. Even fire tanks, although powerful, have to be an almost perfect build to be considered "uber". Most tanks can stand toe to toe with an AV, but they usually need help taking it down and staying alive.

well it sounds like they are going to be nerfing tanks. the taunt and defense of, trollers are going thru some changes, and the one that bothers me is the force field set.

so i would like to see them issue a free respec personally. i want my epics back lol. 5 respecs and still not satisfied with my main, wasted a couple back when i was a noob and didnt realize i could only do it 3 times. only had to do 2 on my PB and maybe will do one more, got one in reserve for when he gets closer to 50.

EDIT: oh and i hear they are doing something to regen scrappers too. sounds like enough changes to powers to me!
