First, I'd like to welcome Little_Spy to the site. We always love seeing new faces on the threads. Second, my choices are also A: Fire and E: Illusion. I think the reasons are relatively obvious to Controller types, but I'll explain for the folks that don't have much experience with the AT.

Fire - This is an excellent choice because of the large amount of pets that can be spawned once the character reaches 32. I believe that each cast grants 4 Fire Imps, and you can have multiple groups active at one time.

Illusion - This is an excellent choice because of the ability to gain pets at level 18. Also, the pets that are granted are indestructible (Phantom Army). Depending on which powers the character has, you can even make the power perma.

Illusion is really cool because of the high damage output. Probably the best solo controller. The downside is that you want to do your damage and get your kill as fast as possible because illusion damage heals FAST.

The other plus is that your pets can keep aggro off you.

You just have incentive to be in a large team.

When my Earth/Storm controller is in groups of up to
four or five, the two Rockies he can summon (3 dmg/3 recharge,
NO HASTEN) are useful additions to party damage output,
portable tankers, etc.

In groups of 6-7 there's often so much offense that for
as long as the group is that large, I summon no pets, and
just concentrate on lockdown.

Even in smaller teams, it's not uncommon for me to team
with a Fire controller in addition to other ATs, so I
let the imps run wild and make sure their targets are
under Freezing Rain (3 recharge, NO HASTEN) and forget
about my own pets, unless we're just a duo, so my offense
is useful.

I would vote Earth and Fire, only because those are the
only two Controller powersets I've played :-)

I have learned to appreciate that 6 of 9 Earth Control
powers debuff enemy defense to some extent, so large
powers such as Quicksand and Earthquake act as +ACC to
the entire party, so long as most or all foes are in those
areas.

With a sufficiently large party, this also increases
damage (fewer misses) so my party's total damage is similar
to if I was a fire controller instead, so long as my
party had good damage to begin with.

That said, the dreaded Fire/Rad or Ill/Rad cookiecutters
are soloing machines of death once they can have many
pets out, with Enervating Field to buff their damage.

I almost exclusively team, so find a lot of enjoyment in
powersets that only come into their own in teams.

Of course, it depends on what you want your 'Troller to do -- damage dealing, damage mitigation, hold aggro. Mind Control has attributes that should not be overlooked.

First, this nonsense about pets. By turning enemies against each other with Mass Confusion, you accomplish the same thing as conjuring imps or phantasms. Granted, it has the downside of potentially reducing XP, as the bad guys take themselves out.

A Mind Controller is the only type that can have two separate Holds by level 2: Mez and Dominate. At level 6, Confuse gives you another way to totally lock down a foe. And by 8 already, Mass Hypno is the best, earliest AoE hold you can get (which the arguable exception of Flash, which can't be canceled, like a Sleep effect). Provided your teammates know not to wake the sleeping baddies.

Since I prefer bad guys to be completely unconscious instead of merely snared, slowed, stunned, or knocked back, I gotta go with Mind.

I've got three different builds, each emphasizing different aspects of the set. You could try that with the others, but I think Mind gives you more options.

Hummm,

There is no real best controller in a sense. However, there is a best controller to fit you playing style.

Loner: You just want to be left alone. Then you want to be an Illusionist. It doesn't matter what your secondary power is, as an Illusionist, you are going to be kicking butt.

Ranger: You go it alone most of the time, but you are a team player on occasions. Then you want to be an Illusionist/Empath. The ability to kick tail/heal & buff is just about unstopable.

Soloist: You want to show the world, dang, you are good. Illusion/Force Field or Mind Control/Force Field. The key here is, if they can't touch you, they can't hurt you.

Teamplayer: You like being part of a crowd. Fire/Empath or Earth/Empath. You work best with a tank aggroing, as you have the best AoE holds in the game, but they need a tight group to work.

Debuff - Radiation Infection, Enervating Field, and Lingering Radiation

Stealth - Superior Invisibility

I'm definitely not saying that you'll be the best at any of the listed categories, but you'll be incredibly rounded. Grab some of the available Power Pools (Fitness, Speed, Teleportation), and you'll be an amazing character.

I underestimated Illusion by much, then. I seen atleast half, maybe all that said Illusion was best. I also seen many Fire too. I never really underestimated this; was always strong. As many of you possible dont know, my father disactivated my account about 5 - 7 months ago and havent been on since. I have a Fire Controller (around level 25ish), and a Illusion controller (around level 22ish). So hopefully once he does activate, i'll post more about Illusion/Fire.

All controllers are good. Period...they are decently rounded.

I DO feel mind needs to be boosted somewhat. Confusion dmg should give REDUCED exp not zero exp.

I have an illusion/kinetics controller atm at lvl 29.

Speed Boost buffs ally recharge and END recovery.

Transfusion works great healing all melee at once...even ranged if your watching.

Siphon speed....oddly useful now they tweaked it. Further buffs my recharge working with hasten to signifigantly lower recharge times.

Inertial Reduction. Lets face it...SS has BAD limits. SJ can go faster. People can have an alternative route to flying. Combined with Speed boost you can give ANYONE a fast transit across ANY map. Further combine with group invis for safe transit.

Phantom army makes temporary tanks to help your main tank out...or pull aggro off a squishie.

Spectral Terror seems to be a decently accurate mass fear that pulses a several times.

Flash is a GREAT PBAOE hold.

Spectral wounds gives you just enough offense to help...or finish something off.

Blind is a good single hold. In conjunction with flash you can hold a boss in two seconds.

Superior invis is great for glowy grabbing missions and keeping you safe in some bad siuations.

Group invis again glowy mish and keeping peeps safe.

Illusion is great solo or teamed.

Heh I felt a lil less love than should be given for Kinetics here so Had to add my 2 cents.

With kinetics you can buff speed with speed boost....this seems to help SJ, SS, FLY, and even TP because end regen and makes them all faster.

Speed boost is like lvl 22 or 24 i think for controller.

Inertial Reduction is a great help as well. Have some poor SS fellow on your group in terra volta? Hope over to him and apply IR and repeat as needed.

That SJ person want to hit the SJ cap really fast? IR again.

TP or Fly person want to get there sometimes today or just differently? SB and IR them and they are just as fast as any SJ at least.

Speed boost can be slotted for speed but ima slot for end.

IR doesnt need any but the first slot for SJ quality.

First, I just wanted to take the chance to welcome you to the site. We always love getting new members. Feel free to be as active as possible. Second, I don't think the creator of this thread necessarily thinks that one is much greater than the other. He just wanted to gather information from Controller players to see some pros and cons. Plus, it spurred a great conversation. Although I lean heavily toward Illusion / Radiation Emission, I also believe that every AT and the powersets associated are balanced. Otherwise, the game wouldn't be much fun. :)

I am not making a statment but i have a lvl 21 illusions, kinetics controller, its been fairly easy and ive only had 4-5 deaths, the invis can help you in getting from A-B and since at lvl 1 u can get an attak that deals 'high' damage it is really worth looking at and considering.
Obviously if your more of an offensive tjhan a mixed off/def then fire is by far the most offensive but mind is the most controlling

Mind/Emp, Pre I5 I would have never said this, built this guy back in Feb. & worked him up to lvl 25. Took forever to kill anything solo, failed a lot of timed missions because of the slow damage dealing. Worked well in groups cause of the empathy side. Really kind of put him in storage & just brought him out when a team couldn't find a healer.

Drug him out the other day & KAPOW. What a difference. Never thought being nerfed would improve things. Now deals double damage to baddies under hold. Solo'd a mish almost as fast as a blaster on steroids & with the Healing Aura makes him virtually unstoppable. He now ROCKS
