Quick note on the Ban in IRC that happened today folks.

You all know we arent crazy freaks in IRC about control and especially about banning people who are fans of our station. We do try to keep the topics PG13 as best as possible but we arent going to ban people or kick them for going off on a tangent once in a while. The Only reason you would ever get banned is if you were excessively harassing other people in the IRC room.. or spamming of course. When I say excessive... I mean sending PM's to people and harassing them.. or just doing alot of really odd emotes and saying really bad things in the main channel.

The person I banned I had talked to last night.. he was complaining about others in the IRC room.. and everything he told me was pretty much bent to the point where it made him look like he had no part in what was going on. I had a log file of the main IRC channel for the past few days and I spent all day digging through it finding out exactly what did happen.

Then I spoke to this persons SG afterwards. The leaders that is. I asked questions.. and showed them what I had found and they agree'd that the best course of action was to just cut ties and quickly to avoid further harassment.

Then I brought the logs etc to the management of PR and made sure they were in agreement with me before acting.

The reason I am telling you all this.. is to assure you that we are not going to ban anyone unless there is a seriously excessive situation happening. I am not going to name off who this person was.. and I would apprecaite anyone who does know who was banned to day to please not tarnish this persons name. Whats done is done.. and in the past. I have no ill will towards him as a person.. I just could not allow him to stay in our IRC channel and keep harassing people.

Quite frankly I was rather shocked.. I knew nothign about what was happening until it was brought to my attention with a complaint.

So please dont be worried.. there is no black list of uber doom.... we are all about having fun.

Its always a difficult situation when forced to ban someone who enjoys listening to the station.

I reviewed the logs as well and agreed with what Cirga chose. I hope these incidence are few and far between but I also hope that everyone understands we will deal with them if forced to.

Incorrect there Sir. You were incessently harassing DJ's who were currently on air.. and when asked to stop you decided to argue with the people who asked you to do so.

Harassing staff is a "no-no". We will not tolerate flaming of a staff member period. I was there.. it was uncalled for.. and you were banned because you decided to argue instead of simply saying "sorry".

I am glad you saw it. In fact.. for anyone else who decides to "re-create" the event.. the logs my of my "violation" is now there too.

Make up your own mind by reading it. The only thing I might be responsible for... is defending myself.

Listen. We dont play favorites. We love ALL our fans equally. You decied to pull a "I have been around listening forever dont tell me what to do attitude".. isntead of just saying "Sorry." You were in the wrong saying what you did.. and you know it.

Pride kills nations my friend. Sometimes you just have to accept you were in the wrong for making a mistake..and everything is just fine after that. If you had just said sorry.. that would have been the end of it.

Sorry, but when you edit a log, you're supposed to edit the part that isn't specific to what happened. Logs are useless coming from either party anyhow... hence why I don't bother to log in IRC. Anybody can edit a .txt file.

I've operated an IRC server for an unrelated group for years, and believe me, incidents will happen and bans are a neccessary evil.

Some people are just jackasses behind a keyboard, but more often things simply get out of hand for one reason or another. Incidents happen more frequently than I'd like to admit, but they do need to be dealt with and the DJs/admins shouldn't need to apologize for doing the right thing.

My advice to IRC-goers is to take arguments to private as soon as you realize it's becoming one. It's been my experience that public arguments are the #1 source of bad mojo in IRC (Though I haven't had to deal with inconsiderate people rudely grousing over music selection... I imagine that'll rank right up there).

Come to think of it, it's much the same in real life... Arguing loudly in public is obnoxious, and it makes the people around you want to hit you with blunt objects. :p

Hoping this is considered advice and not "my 2 cents", but it's usually best when these things happen for the staff to say what they saw and leave it at that. Repeat postings by the staff entices the argument and continues to present an air of challenge from the people in question.

State what the staff saw as reason for ban/punishment and leave it at that. The person may rave for a few more days, but in the shorter run, this is MMO's radio station and their word is law.

As a relatively new listener, player and parent, I am pleasantly pleased with COH and its affiliates attempts to live up to a set of standards that make this world much more friendly for all it's users. Without these efforts, the community we all live and play in would deteriorate into some thing less than what we all love, and quickly I am afraid.

Just because you pay a monthly fee to play this game, does not give you a free pass to do or say whatever you want to. In fact, I believe it's the opposite, you have the opportunity to behave and treat others better than in the real world. Way more enjoyable, trust me.

In the end it all comes down to character, it's all we really have in this world and ultimately what we will be judged on when we go.
