As everyone can see rATT Bastard has been spamming the message "uninstall windows sp2". For god's sake disregard his advise. There are tons of preliminary troubleshooting measures that should be taken long before that one. Me and my roommate are running bf2 just fine with service pack 2, not to mention the literally 100's of posts online I have seen of people running bf2 just fine on sp2. I am not saying he is necessarily wrong, but definitely exhaust all other avenues before doing so.
Ratt bastard don't come in here spuing nonsense.

so how do fix my problem! with the single dics dvd version i realy wanna play and iv asked the shop were i got it from and they said they dont have the 3 dics cd version:-[

I never bothered installing SP2, not after all the bad things i heard about it soon after it was released...Then that guy who works for microsoft basically said don't install it and that put the final nail in the coffin for me...
I run BF2 fine with SP1, i also run Rome: total war fine with it, and everyone on my forum who got SP2 said they couldn't run RTW after they got SP2, and they had to go back to SP1...

When you install sp2 the best way to do it is to not install it over things. Reinstall windows, install chipset drivers. Then install sp2. Then install sp2. I am not saying this equals 'no problems' but it is the best way to install sp2.

TO DATE REMOVAL OF SP2 HAS FIXED 4 BF2 PROBLEMS ON 4 MACHINES, ALL DIFFERENT CONFIGS, DIFFERENT VIDEO CARDS,
BUT I CAN SAY PEOPLE WITH SP2 AND 6800 NVIDIA SEEM TO
BE HAVING NO PROBLEM. ALSO DVD OR CD VERSION DOESNT MATTER
PROBLEMS EXIST ON BOTH IF YOU CANT INSTALL WITH CD'S
THEN TRY WITHOUT SP2, IT SEEMS DVD USERS CAN INSTALL BUT
THEN CRASH, ALSO FIX IS NO SP2. AND IF MR PENN READ MY POST
I DIDNT SAY REMOVAL OF SP2 IS GOOD THING, IT SAYS IF YOU WANT TO PLAY THE GAME. I DID GET IT INSTALLED AND RUNNING
WITH SP2, BUT I COULDNT PLAY ALL THE MAPS, SINGLE PLAYER DIDNT WORK, AND IT LOOKED LIKE CRAP! THERE WAS A WHOLE WORLD
OF DIFFERENCE WITH AND WITHOUT SP2. ALSO KINDA FUNNY MINE WORKED WELL WITH 1.01 PATCH AND SP2, LOL, BUT IT SEEMS THAT
PATCHED SCREWED MORE PEOPLE THAN IT HELPED.
SORRY ABOUT LONG POST
UNINSTALL SP2 AT YOUR OWN RISK BUT MY MACHINE
WORKS SAME WITH AND WITHOUT OTHER THAN BF2

I had been using BF2 On windows XP SP2 until my hard disk crashed. I had to reformat and reinstall everything. Did windows then drivers then SP2. BF2 would load fine then once you got into the game after about 1 minute it would either crash to desktop or reboot. After Uninstalling SP2 (not the best idea for security reasons) the game works fine.
My PC is: AMD 2800+ (Barton)
MSI KT6V MB
ABIT Radeon 9600xt 256meg
1 gig Ram
S/B Live 5.1 Digital
P.S. I had the game working beautifully with a Daytona Geforce 5200 128meg on the same system.

don't ever install sp2, its so unstable. if have done don't uninstall it because your comp wont work after. it might be of from a fresh install.

I am going to go on record right now after having built many computers, installed SP2 on them and seen them work fine for months; AND after having seen my friend (who builds computers for a living www.allcom-inc.com ) install far more SP2's than I can count--I am going to say that it would take alot of convincing for me to move to the 'anti-SP2' side on this issue. This is going to probably sound arrogant but I am inclined to think that it may be your bad hardware that is not liking SP2. Update your bios's, make sure you get brand name motherboards and ram, check/update your hardware drivers, check your general configs, blah blah. I mean I've had such a good experience with SP2 (aside from BF2) that my advice is for anyone who can keep it and run bf2,do so. Contact microsoft info on the issue. See if they have fixes to the 'seeming' bugs you are experiencing.
ON THE OTHER HAND:
If you are sure that the game works better without it, well, knock your self out. BF2 is such an awesome game. Whatever you have to do to play it DO SO. But if you can determine what the problem is without uninstalling do that also. I am seeing 4 computers personally on my end of things that are running bf2 fine with service pack 2 just fine. Two of the computers belong to me in my place.

sp2 will not kill your system, I had it for a while, I did have to remove it, it was due to an isue with a driver for the the video card I have, software conflicts happen. It was initiated as a security and some fixes to existing vulnerabilities, and further fixed via microsoft update, new software always has bugs. I would not suggest to remove it unless it is specifically hindering your system to run certain software.
