I actually logged on after a millenia and saw your post, cant remember your issue, but being persistant is preferable to blowing up; I feel bad your problem didn't get solved, feel free to bump your origanal post back up, Im sure the longer the problem persists with others, the better chances you would have of getting an exact answer to the dillema. Although I do understand you probably got some griefers to some of those posts, and by the way, the critics wer wrong, Fantastic four was great.

Give me the model#'s of the drives in question. Are they actually DVDroms?
Next give me detailed specs on your whole system. Who built it. How old is it.
I have seen something like your situation before for something else a long time ago. Basically the problem was his operating system was so screwed up and wacked out because of viruses, spyware, and adware that for some reason his drive wasnt working properly. We reinstalled windows and that totally solved the problem.
Now listen to me. Anyone who is installing BF2 for the first time. I strongly encourage you to start your system fresh. If you know how, and if you are not to put off by the work, REINSTALL WINDOWS CLEAN. Get a clean start. I wrote another post on how to do this. Here is a piece of it:
" First back up your files. Then reformat your harddrive and reinstall windows XP. Then install the chipset drivers for your system, then lan drivers. Then Graphics drivers for whatever card you have. Go online and download the latest edition of SP2 from microsoft. There are a few different methods of doing this I won't elaborate on here. Follow whatever instructions microsoft provides concerning how to apply SP2 to your XP. After you are done then install BF2.
I have heard that the early versions of SP2 did have bugs but that microsoft has fixed them. Of course all newly released software has bugs. So if you are using the SP2 that was released right when it came out you might want to reinstall windows and patch it with the latest version or perhaps patch the SP2 you currently have. But the thing about me is I have this obsession with reinstalling windows just to make sure things are perfect. Of course if you are just patching the SP2 you already have then you will want to uninstall BF2 completely first. Then patch. Then reinstall bf2. "
Again any suggestion I make may not solve your particular issue. But you have to look at everything. Software and hardware.
Is your system clean?
Is your hardware configured properly?
Do you have updated drivers?
How old it the hardware? Is it broke!!
I have three systems in my apartment and just in the last 4 months I had 3 items fail on me,
Cable modem.
300watt powersupply fan died(an Antec of all brands).
A cpu fan died(it was the stock fan and only 6 monthsold).
A 3 year old DVDrom refused to install things properly. It would skip files, corrupting the install.
You never know what can be the problem. When these things went bad on me I had to go through a step by step process of troubleshooting to get at the problem. That is one reason why I love having 3 systems with relatively similar setup. It is easier to trouble shoot. But sometimes you just got to buy a new part when you are not sure. Like with my modem. I really didnt know if my modem was what was causing me to have major ping spikes. Well after a month of messing around I just broke down and bought a new modem and wow, it totally solved the problem. It was a four year old modem.
Don't get angry, just roll with it and get a 'long term' mentality. Be patient. Alot of times when I get pissed at my system I know its time to hop on my cannondale and go riding or go hang out with friends at coffee shop. Or read a book or some hardware reviews.
