Ranking System | What was Dice thinking?

Hi all,

I'm new here, and I hate to introduce myself on a negative note but I was wondering if anyone else feels the same way I do about the ranking system for BF2. It seems that Dice and EA have decided to reward players based on the countless hours they're willing to play rather than a player's actual combat/team skills and effectiveness as a player.

I can't believe that Dice / EA expects players to get 250,000 points before they can become Master Gunnery Sergeant or Sergeant Major. At my current rate, which is about 2.5 points per minute it would take me 70 days of non-stop play to reach that. If I played 2 hours a day 365 days a year, which is more than I usually can afford to play it would take me 2.3 years to reach those ranks. The badges, medals, and ribbons are worse.

Take for instance the Expert Ground Defense badge. It requires that you get 24 kills in one round with a TOW missile platform and have a total of 750 global hours in a TOW. The 24 kills in one round should is a reasonable expectation. However, the 750 hours in the TOW is really not a measure of skill or proficiency as much as it's a measure of one's ability to withstand excruciatingly boring games that require the player to sit in one spot hoping someone will pass into view.

Many of the other badges, ribbons, and medals have just as ridiculous requirements for hours logged. Why not put a greater emphasis on a player's skill rather than a player's ability to withstand mind-numbing repetition. If I wanted to perform the same task thousands of times for thousands of hours I'd play an MMORPG.

For the Expert Anti-Tank badge for example, why not require that the player gets 20 infantry kills, 10 armor kills, 10 transport kills, and 4 helicopter/jet kills with a K/D ratio of 4/1 with the Anti-tank weapon in one round rather than having to get 40 kills in a round and log 1000 hours of game play with the Anti-tank weapon. I think the first example is a much greater demonstration of a player's ability then someone who is simply willing to do their time to get the badge.

Anyway, as a dedicated 1942/DC player who's been looking forward to BF2 for some time I would have to say that overall I think the game delivered the goods. I'm just really dissapointed with how the ranking and awards system works. If anyone else feels the same way I'd like to hear. If anyone thinks that Dice and EA got the ranking and award system right I'd also like to hear justification for that arguement.

See ya guys.

I totally agree with u man..i mean its crazy how they expect u to play the game for that long..u right....Y not base it off of skill and not time playing the game..thats stupid...i was lookin forward to gettin a bunch of high rank badges and ribbons but from what u have jus explained..fuck that...only because im not gunna waste my time doing the same thing in a game for that long..it jus makes the game extremely boring..... Oh yea.. they still havent fixed my points...I wrote them an e-mail about it 2 days ago..and i havent gotten one back yet..that shows there concern about what type of problems people are having with this game..

I agree that the game "delivered the goods", I could care a less about the ranking and medal system, I do play on ranked servers, but when it comes down to getting a couple more points from some unsuspecting infantry or following a team member because he asked for cover, I choose the team member; I prefer the style of the game. I do agree it can be hard to get any rating, and man , getting turned into human stew by your own artilery gets anoying. As to how they could have made a better ranking system, thats a tough one; I think pure repetition could make you better at the game, therefore having achived a rank after grinding so much might be a justification for the rank you have, not as solid a reason as Id like.

Nah i think it's good as it is. I don't actually have the full game yet, but if they made ranks and medals easy to get be getting kills, then everybody would have the highest badges and ranks in a couple of days. When you see someone with a low rank you think to yourself, ah they're noobs they haven't been playing long, and when you see someone with really high rankings and badges you respect them because they've put the hours in and worked to get there.

I agree and i think that this is the exact reason there are so many cheaters on the ranked servers .

Re: Ranking System | What was Dice thinking?

I do agree that the ranking is a bit steep, and may be based purely upon the amount of time spent playing, but the badges and medals must not, since I already have all of the medals and haven't played 1000 hours as any one of the kits.

The hours part is kind of sucky, but hours played do contribute to skill as a player. It's all about the micro-muscle memory. Regardless of what the activity is, the mind memorizes muscle movement and executes more efficiently if the brain registers the movement as a regular occurance.
