What is the best RAM

In my search for upgraded computer guts, so that I can actually play BF2. I came across a mad selection of new RAM. I am looking to upgrade my MoBo, CPU, Video Card, and of course install new RAM (since my current RAM will not work on my new MoBo). Generally what I seeing is PC4200 runs at 533 MHz and the CAS is 4-4-4. PC5400 runs at 667 MHz and the CAS is 4-4-4. Last but not least PC6400 runs at 800 MHz but the CAS jumps to 5-5-5. These are all DDR2 modules, what is the best?

Re: What is the best RAM

I am kinda busy right now, but I will post later today. DON't buy until you let me run some things by you. My favorite thing in the world is hardware selection for a gaming rig. I will say this up front AMD is better for gaming. That has almost become a cleche, but the benchmarks bare this out.

I will post more recommendations later today.

Re: What is the best RAM

I bought 2 gigs of dual channel PC3200 Corsair....I couldnt ask for anything better....when I bought it it was like
$96 bucks a gig....so I got 2 gigs of dual channel for just under $200.

Re: What is the best RAM

I am also running a Pentium 4 2.53 ....and I have to agree that AMD is best for gaming....I also have an Nvidia GeForce 6800 Ultra....if your vid card is good and your Memory is good.....your processor should be good to go as long as you atleast meet the sys req's. In this game I have found that RAM and Vidcard are everything.

Re: What is the best RAM

For some reason the higher the speed of the RAM generally the higher the cas latency is going to be unless you have special performance ram. I know I should know the reason why but i just never looked into it.

But do this. Tell me what you are planning to get. I have done alot of research and am fairly acquainted with different hardware setups that will play the game well.

If at all possible get either an x800xl or a gt6800.

Try not to get a card that has less than 16 pipes, 256mb ram, 256megabit intface, DDR3 memory.

The game is very 'card' dependent. Benchmarks have shown that BF2 (contrary to HL2 engine) performs almost exactly the same on (for example) athlon64 939 3000+ as it does on 4000+, all other things being equal. Now this fact only applies to CPU's with same technology in them. Like when you jump from one line of CPU's to the next highest in technology. For instance, the Venice 3000+ will show a measurable increase in performance over the Barton3000+.

What this means is that you don't have to spend a bunch of money on a cpu to get performance from the game. You should get a baseline cpu(with amd i suggest Venice 3000+)of a recent series and spend more money on a graphics card.

Intel cpu's are a slightly different story, but just make sure you are getting an 800mhz Front Side Bus or better, and with Hyperthreading technology. If you are looking at an Intel CPU, (pcie based system) you need to be concerned about 'heat' and 'power consumption'. I honestly would not feel comfortable with less than a 400 watt psu(brand name), considering that the card alone takes up alot of energy also.

Notice the following power consumption charts for pcie based Intel cpu's. This is just the cpu/mobo alone.

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showd...spx?i=2275&p=13

I am running the game on all high graphics, 50 - 70 fps, @1024x786, 85refreshrate, AAx4, AFx8: (no lag)

AMD Athl64 Venice 3000+ 939
MSI Neo4 platinum (instructions are trcky w/RAM)
(2x512)(2x256)Corsair, cs2.5,400mhz, pc3200
total 1.5gb of ram
ATI Radeon x800xl
Antec 430watt truepower
Seagate SATA w/NCQ 80gb

NOTE: in almost any hardware scenario, if you are only using 1 gb of RAM, you will notice swap lag if you are running the game on maxed out settings. Adding 512mb of RAM to my one gig totally cleared this up. Best case scenario is (2x1gb) if you can afford it.

Re: What is the best RAM

Hey thanks John, that is some awesome info. My wife spazzed when she heard me say I was going to upgrade our comp. She made me order a whole new one instead (shucks)! We ordered from Dell since they had 34% off the XPS Gen 5 systems. Which kinda sucks because they only use Intel guts, but the new rig should run BF2 with ease. It better or I will be real pissed!

My New Rig:

Intel P4 3.2 GHz w/ HT (800 FSB)
1 GB DDR2 SDRAM 667 MHz (2x512)
256MB ATI Radeon X850 XT Platinum Edition

Re: What is the best RAM

Like I said, with graphics maxed out you may run into swap lag. Then again you may not. But there are many people saying that with graphics maxed out and one gig of RAM they are getting lag. With high end cards. On the other hand I have read that if you just wait a few minutes while in the game your lag will go away or just scale down to a minimum. You have a damn good system.

Re: What is the best RAM

Hey Fallen,

Hows that Gen 5 running BF2 now?

Just curious I may need to get a new cpu as well.
Mine is a 2003 and not built for gaming.

Re: What is the best RAM

Intel is just fine for gaming, don't let the AMD freaks tell you other wise. Granted AMD is slightly faster for the same amount of money you spend, but in other areas intel is slightly faster. Neither is advantaged enough in either area to say "get XXX always". And if you want to get real technical the pentium M beats out both the AMD 64FX and the p4EE in video games so it's the only chip you should buy if you want raw performance.

Latency with ram isn't that important really. Granted tighter timings are always better, but faster ram can't really run at timings that tight unless you volt mod the hell out of things.

THe question should be what speed RAM does your current mobo support, and then get the fastest you can. Also the faster the ram, the bigger the overclock you can use. This holds true even in DDR1 systems. Tight timing PC3200 sticks are all fine for your average computer user that doesn't know much, but faster pc3500-4400 sticks with loose timings are much better if you know how to tinker with things.

OMG exactly finally somone who actually says good (and) bad things about (both) intel and amd..... to many people favor amd to much .... not that amd is not great if all you do is play games amd is fine ... i play games and all my other stuff i do mostly multitasking.... intel suits me better... its kinda annoying when people say intel sucks because amd plays games just that little bit better intel does do things better then amd to .... i dont see many people saying shit about amd

I’m not sure what you’re getting at.

If your motherboard supports PC3200 then it can handle PC4000. The difference is the clock rate of each (pc3200 is 200, pc4000 is 250). This translates into FSB 800 vs FSB 1000, obviously one is much faster.

The catch is that to see that speed out of PC4000 you MUST overclock your FSB, which will innately overclock your CPU.

So the issue isn’t compatibility (technically nothing supports pc4000 or any DDR1 speed over PC3200) but if your cpu/mobo can handle the overclock to see those speeds. If your motherboard is a quality build, and your cooling is good enough it’s rather easy to see those speeds.

Re: What is the best RAM

I wanna see a Pent. M beat an FX in any benchmarks besides power consumption. That thing is nothing but a Pent 3 with more cache and tweaked out. It cannot overcome the inherent shortcomings of the Pent. 3.

Re: What is the best RAM

the PM OC'd beats the fx77 oc'd. it's much faster per clock in games.

It's the fastest gaming chip out. Howeve it's not recomended as it is week in other areas.

These benchmarks are dated (it's older P M vs fx55, but there is a newer one where it kicks the crap out of the fx57)

http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20050525/pentium4-10.html

Sorry but you're uniformed on the facts.

And for the record, clock for clock a p3 will kick the crap out of an AMD64/fx, or a P4c/e/EE in gaming as long as it's near the same clock rate. The problem with the p3 has nothing to do with it's ability, but rather it hit a roof with clock speed, and it doesn't support some instructions (strictly for encoding and work apps that have nothing to do with gaming) that the P4 uses (which is why the P4 slaughters AMD64 and PM in those apps). The pentium M is just a more advanced P3, with a HUGE chache and thus beats the snot out of every other chip in games. Also lets take a look at the fact that the P M can hit ghz values the p3 couldn't.

If you want a PC to hit insane gaming performance, build a P M tower.
